Is anyone who pre-ordered the Nook or anyone thinking about ordering one concerned about the lack of formats supported? I personally get use out of .txt, .doc, and RTF formats, and there is no word of conversion possibilities or anything, unless I missed it.
If there is any information on this, can anyone please share it with me, or if not, what do you guys think about the lack of formats? |

If anyone has a Nook on order, please cancel said order ASAP.
That is unless we find out that ePub at B&N and on the Nook will be infected with Adept and not social password type DRM. |

Looks like both methods are supported:
"Barnes & Noble is adopting Adobe® Content Server, a server software solution that copy protects eBooks downloaded to nook, mobile phone applications and other dedicated eBook reading devices that have integrated the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK. Additionally, Adobe is integrating Barnes & Noble’s eReader social content protection technology into Adobe Content Server, Adobe Reader Mobile SDK and, eventually, into Adobe Digital Editions." http://au.sys-con.com/node/1152144 |

Can I put other files on my nook? X Yes, you can transfer files from your computer to your nook using a USB connection. You can transfer ePub and PDB files, as well as MP3s, PDFs, and JPGs. |

Yes, because we should support the server based DRM that locks people out of the books that they purchased over one that fulfills whatever legitimate claims DRM might have in the least onerous way possible. And why? Because it might annoy the EPub club. Who cares? As long as I am assured access to the content I buy and that content is available on multiple platforms (dedicated devices, phones, PCs, etc.), I really don't care that what format it is in. Whatever upgrade their performing to the EReader DRM that allows books to expire after they have been lent will also allow for library use, so that need should sort itself out. If you are going to argue that this will cause confusion, frankly, it's the EPub club's fault for allowing EPub to mean ADOBE ADEPT DRMed EPub in common parlance. The latter is just as closed and proprietary as the Amazon Kindle format; the fact that the licensing fees go to the DRM vendor and not to an EBook retailer or device manufacturer is irrelevant.

I am interested in this device, but I need to be able to use it in China. I doubt the whispernet will be available there, so I need to be able to load books via my PC. Additionally, China blocks some web pages. Some pages are always blocked, some come and go based on the political climate and the changing content of the web page. So to purchase a new book I might need to have a friend in the US purchase it and then email it to me. Is that something that would be possible with a password based DRM?

I'm really starting to get discouraged. I've searched about 10 books and consistently found them to be 5-10 dollars cheaper on amazon rather than b&n.

I initially liked the look of the device, but will stick with my Kindle for now. There are a few things I think they got right, external memory, removable battery, but not enough to change devices. Funny thing was, I was ready to buy before I watched the video.
1. I already hate the Kindle book navigation. Since, I now have over 300 books purchased from Amazon and hundreds of personal documents, I shudder to think of trying to get through them all using a 'slider'. Even if I kept my storage online, that's a lot to go through. WHat was up with the purchasing interface in the video? That did NOT look right to me 2. I'm extremely suspicious of the language in the lending statement. Sounds to me like you can loan a book once and that not all books will be available to loan. If that's left up to the publishers there'll be more not than can 3. While the menus on the Kindle aren't the most flashy, I didn't see anything in the video that made me think the nook's were designed better, just faster 4. The pricing on B&N compared to Amazon is ridiculous. Maybe it'll get better, maybe not. |

Judging by the promotional video on Engadget, the page-turn speed is the same as my 505. That's pretty disappointing, so much for progress
![]() The separate LCD touch-screen is an innovative idea, but I sure hope it can be turned off while reading as otherwise it will be very distracting. |

I'd guess, like Dale that it is some variation on the eReader encryption which would allow for sharing of the book as they have indicated that you can do with nookie... |
