The more I read this topic the more I have to restrain myself from buying a new 505...just in case.
Tall reader? The same width as 6"? What is a point? I mean if you use medium or large font then regardless how tall is the reader only so few words fits in one line!
Why could not they make 8" or even 7 with standard ratio?

Damn.

I have a question--do you have to live in an area with 3G access in order to use the wireless feature? Because I don't, and if I'm going to lay out $400 for a wireless reader, I'd just as soon have the feature I'm paying the extra money for.

I would imagine that it just drops back to standard EDGE data if you're not in a 3G area. If they don't support EDGE it will be a really small footprint of coverage compared to what the Kindle offers. For the Kindle it adjusts to whatever data speed is available in your coverage area.

I find the lines to be long enough; the longer screen means fewer page turns fwiw. And the option of a 2-page ladscape side-by-side view. I find this view handy in Word 2007; dunno ifI'd want it on a Reader though.

[Nevermind--I just read that the NYPL canceled its $100 out-of-town option.]

The Sony Reader Daily Edition, is not my cup of tea. Far to big. Then again I only want to read novel's.
I did a side-by-side between the 505 and 600 today. The backgrounds were a similar light gray (lighter than the 500), but the 505 text seems black while the 600 was a dark gray. Both are legible by themselves, but the better contrast of the 505 i obvious when you look at both of them together. (BTW, I wound up buying a 300--review is posted in this subforum.)

I have failing eyesight so I have to read a large font. I'm interested in the bigger screen because as I continue to lose my eyesight, I'll have to make the font bigger and bigger. With a 7" screen I'll have more words per line, even at a large font.

The 505 is still the best in my book, because all I really want is good readable contrast, at least a 6" screen, and good format support. The 505 had all of that.

What I'm wondering is, why didn't Sony come out with a new 6" non-touch reader, or at least keep making the 505?

I'm guessing they wanted the non-touch model to be at a lower price point, and they didn't see a market for 2 non-touch models. It would be Un-Sony-ish to have more than 3 models of a consumer electronics product, IMO.

I can see the casual reader going for the portability and price point of the 300, especially since Sony is pushing library support. Imagine people talking themselves into it: "It's $199, but I'll save money reading library books on it that I never have to go to the library to check out."

why we do know 600 screen is worse? where do u get that from?

also will the 600 be able to check out books at all?

I think you completely failed to understand the point.

I want to read with bigger fonts too! BUT it doesn't matter whether it is 7", 9" or 123" tall if the width of the screen is the same as in 505, then you will get on the new reader exactly the same amount of words per line as on 505, unless you prefer to read in landscape, which is:
1. a pain in the neck on 505, because the lower lines are half-invisible & page turn is a lot slower.
2. you will have to turn pages a lot more often than in portrait mode.
