Thanks Wallcraft. From reading this thread it sounds like epub is a better quality for these books. So it sounds like I might be better off going with your second suggestion. I will check out WHSmiths. I have never tried to change any format so I will see how it goes. I really hope JK Rowling will take note of the sales figures. I love having ebooks!

Can you strip thr DRM from MS Reader format using ConvertLIT? If so, you can then use Calibre to convert to ePub or LRF for your Sony and ePub for Stanza and Mobipocket for the Kindle. if not, ePub is your best choice as you'll be able to read on your 505 quite nicely.

i see that rather than pull the buggy version of lord of the rings from the kindle store, amazon has made it even cheaper. this is very disappointing.

How can one tell when a new version of an eBook has been posted to Amazon?

So, has there been any indication of what sort of sales numbers the books have garnered in a week's time?

If you already bought it, it doesn't matter. You can't have the updated/fixed version. Unless you can convince CS to return the old one and refund you money, then repurchase at whatever that day's price is.

The Clutter Diet just updated it's text, adding a linked table of contents. No early purchasers can have it (unless you can swing the above), per the letter I got back from Amazon DTP today. It also mentioned that a "number" of authors have complained about this policy.

I'd go to the publisher as well as CS and see what happens. It's unfair that you've paid for something and yet cannot get what you've paid for.

Has Amazon, Fictionwise or others fixed the problems that seemed to be very common in the ebook versions when it came out earlier this month. How would one go about finding out which has been updated and corrected?

We have to wait for someone to buy them and tell us their version doesn't have those problems.

So far, CS says they are "working on a solution". The author knows about it (and told those who follow her blog to bug CS - apparently the publisher has no say in the process).

I guess I can return the one I have and rebuy it, but I should not have to do that. I do have annotations, but most of them were to mark the chapter starts (something now done in the new version, with it's updated TOC).

It's not for Amazon or FW to fix them; only the publisher can do that.

Well in the case of the eReader version it did look like some of the errors were due to the format conversion. But all the other errors do need to be fixed via the publisher.

i checked the sample again last night. it was still bad, so i sent another message to amazon. i got this response this morning:

Thank you for contacting us at Amazon.com.

First I would like to thank you for your patience and for bringing this to our attention.

Once we discover a problem with a kindle book. We contact the publisher and we take steps to correct it as soon as possible. The issue you contacted us about has been addressed, and you should be able to redownload the kindle book Lord of the Rings Trilogy without encountering further problems. Any more questions or concerns please contact our Kindle support team.
-----
i haven't checked AGAIN, but i would be surprised if it were fixed. i think it's time to forget about this for a while.

In reply to an earlier post on April 29, 2009 7:35 AM PDT
Melinda Varian says:

Well, I just redownloaded LOTR and the problem definitely has NOT been fixed. I will send them another note, too.
