Again, Amazon has stated they've made enhancements:

Just amazon's way of telling you that they only want you to use KFX on the new Kindles.

Remember amazon does not let you D&T for usb KFX.

The purpose of this is probably that Amazon doesn't want people to remove DRM and take books out of their ecosystem. They want to data mine their customers; can't do it if folks read Kindle books on non-Kindle devices.

It's not merely KFX. As soon as it became possible to remove DRM from KFX via the Kindle app, Amazon updated their DRM.

And the current tools can still remove the DRM? I tried the other day and was able to remove DRM, although I don't have the most recent app.

It’s a different trade off for different people. For some it may be more important to have an improved e-reader than to have easy access to files for DRM removal.

Keeping an old Kindle is useful for now but Amazon could discontinue Download & Transfer for older models in the future, especially those outside of the four year support window.

MTP is Media Transfer Protocol.
That does not prevent transfer by USB in of itself.
(but it can be flakey as many Calibre users have discovered)
I hate all the HELP devices now force upon us just to broaden their (mis)user base .
