When David and Susan stumble upon on a murder, they soon find themselves involved in a series of curious incidents, which they cannot connect, until… the death of Baroness Grevas. Susan and David are plunged into a mystery with some surprising revelations. Will David and Susan work through their differences?
And can David finally get to the bottom of the murder and provide his paper with that first-class ‘scoop’? '

What happened is that I got it yesterday and forgot to thank you. This morning, as I was reviewing posts, etc., I realized my mistake in not thanking you for mentioning that book.

Free on Amazon UK - The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Millennium Series Book 1) by Stieg Larsson

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder - and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family.

He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history.

But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Free on Amazon UK - Nowhere To Run by Carolyn Davidson

'Sarah Harmon’s life has been complicated. Very complicated, for a nineteen- year old just leaving high school. But as she steps out on a clear autumn day to run the nearby cliff trails, she’s ready to put the past behind her and move on. She has a secret one-way plane ticket to a new life, and a plan, waiting. But time for Sarah has run out. For she’s about to cross paths with someone more twisted than the path she’s running. Inspector Susan Kovalsky, not long on the job and fleeing her own city demons, has her hands full. The town of Lion’s Bay might appear picture post-card perfect, nestled on the stunning clear waters of Georgian Bay, but there’s a lot going on under its shiny surface. It seems the more stones she turns over, the more secrets she unearths, and the more ripples she creates. Will she ever discover who wanted this beautiful young woman dead? After all, the suspects are in no short supply. How about all the people who lost their savings trusting her father? Could one of them have sought revenge? What about her fiancé, Tommy Logan, son of a prominent local family? Did he learn of her plans to flee? And what about Tommy’s strange cousin Trudy? There’s something not right about her at all. And Tommy’s mother sees the way her husband looks at their future daughter-in-law. But is it just a coincidence that Sarah’s future father-in-law’s first wife died on the very same cliffs? With eerie similarities to the death of a local young girl years earlier, a murder that has gone unsolved, Inspector Kovalsky’s suspicions deepen. Reports that the lovely Sarah had a bit of a wild side unnerve our detective as she begins to solve the crime.'

Free on Amazon UK - Mycroft Holmes and The Case of the Missing Popes by David Dickinson

A mysterious burglary. Political intrigue. And another case for Mycroft Holmes.

In the third of David Dickinson's brilliant series of Mycroft Holmes novellas, the brother of Britain's most famous detective is approached by a distraught young aristocrat, the son of the Home Secretary Lord Melrose.

There has been a mysterious burglary at his father’s mansion. Two famous Raphael Popes have disappeared. Mycroft travels north by a special train. Did the thieves break in or was it an inside job? What secrets are lurking in the Stewards Room? How great are the Duke’s debts and his obligations to the moneylenders? What is amiss in his relations with his wife?

Fans of historical fiction and of Dickinson’s earlier Mycroft novellas will love this story, as will devotees of the original Sherlock Holmes stories whose tone is superbly captured by the author.

The Game is the seventh in the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R King. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US. I've read and enjoyed pretty much all of this series.

link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FC1AG6

Spoiler:
Quote:
BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Laurie R. King's Garment of Shadows.

It’s only the second day of 1924, but Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, find themselves embroiled in intrigue. It starts with a New Year’s visit from Holmes’s brother Mycroft, who comes bearing a strange package containing the papers of an English spy named Kimball O’Hara—the same Kimball known to the world through Kipling’s famed Kim. Inexplicably, O’Hara withdrew from the "Great Game" of espionage and now he has just as inexplicably disappeared.

When Russell discovers Holmes’s own secret friendship with the spy, she knows the die is cast: she will accompany her husband to India to search for the missing operative. But Russell soon learns that in this faraway and exotic land, it’s often impossible to tell friend from foe—and that some games aren’t played for fun but for the highest stakes of all…life and death.

Note (marginally connected to this topic, since the Great Game period provides background for King's The Game): I've really enjoyed reading some of Peter Hopkirk's non-fiction titles about the Great Game, so if you get inspired by some of the fiction set in this period and want to read up on the actual history, Hopkirk's books are not too ridiculously expensive and get generally good reviews. And what was going on during that period is so wild that the non-fiction practically reads like fiction . I especially like the book where Hopkirk traces Kipling's Kim's route in modern day India and Pakistan, which especially ties into this book, but I've enjoyed all that I've read.

A whole bunch of Ed McBain titles are at $1.99 at Kindle US - mostly 87th Precinct and a few Matthew Hope. Amazon has put chunks of the series on sale from time to time, but if you are new to this, or missing some, here's a chance to possibly pick some up.

Too many titles (36) at $1.99 to list them all, but here is a link that should pick them all up:
