Here's a History Ebook that Always Stays Up-to-Date (Well, Close to It).

I came across this historical ebook recently. It employs a cutting edge (at least I have never seen it used before) technique that allows information on the topics that it covers to stay up to date!

The ebook is on the subject of U.S. Presidents and First Ladies. Here's how it works. Instead of giving information within the ebook about each President and First Lady, it gives a link to a website which gives the information.

We've all used ebooks that do that, but here's the novelty and beauty of this system: all of the links go to a single website (BestTrips.guide). They keep the information on each President and First Lady up-to-date. And it practically eliminates the annoying issue of dead links that occurs in ebooks which link to a variety of different websites.

FYI--the book covers the Presidents and First Ladies up to the current ones, Barak and Michelle Obama.

This is a free ebook (you do have to sign up for a newsletter). So why not take a look-see at this new kind of ebook, and see what you think?

Title: Presidents and First Ladies.
Format(s): Pdf.
Author(s): John Notgrass (research and design).
Publisher: Notgrass Company.
Pages: i + 39.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A.
Book Description (from the Introduction):
Whether they came from wealthy families or from humble surroundings, all of the U.S. Presidents and First Ladies were born and grew up as children very much like yours. As they grew, they made decisions that guided them toward the White House. This field trip guide introduces you to sites around the country where you can get to know these men and women as people, as fellow human beings with strengths and weaknesses like the rest of us.
Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download based upon the fact that it is offered free (if a person subscribes to a newsletter) on the publisher's website (http://www.notgrass.com/).
URL: http://www.notgrass.com/notgrass/ (look for red button at the bottom righthand corner with "free field trip guide" on it. Click on it. Follow the prompts.

85% Off on this Ebook about a Man's Search for Shakespeare's First Folio.

That's 85% off of the digital list price.

You may have noticed more Shakespeare-related books being released or marked down recently. You may not have known why. In a few days, it will be the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. (As you know, I am reticent about sharing my thoughts and feelings about things , so I won't say how utterly stupid I think that it is to observe the anniversary of someone's death. Or about how it makes about as much sense as the trend nowadays to commemorate the beginning of a war, such as was done recently with the beginning of World War I. I'll just keep those thoughts to myself.).

I think that the markdown price lasts for about 21 hours from now, which would be 8 p.m. Saturday Eastern Time.

The Millionaire and the Bard: Henry Folger's Obsessive Hunt for Shakespeare's First Folio. By Andrea Mays. Rated 4.5 stars from 63 reviews, at Amazon. Print list price $16.00; digital list price $12.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Simon and Schuster, publisher. 369 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Millionaire-Ba...dp/B00LD1S4BM/.

Book Description
The miraculous and romantic story of Shakespeare’s First Folio, and of the American industrialist whose thrilling pursuit of the book became a lifelong obsession: “Mays’s narrative is so fast-moving, and peppered with such fascinating detail, it almost reads like a thriller” (Entertainment Weekly, Grade: A).

When Shakespeare died in 1616, half of his plays died with him. No one—not even their author—believed that his writings would last. In 1623, seven years after his death, Shakespeare’s business partners, companions, and fellow actors gathered copies of his plays and manuscripts and published thirty-six of them. This massive book, the First Folio, was intended as a memorial to their deceased friend. They could not have known that it would become one of the most important books ever published in the English language.

Over two and a half centuries later, a young man fresh out of law school, Henry Folger, bought a book at auction—a later, 1685 edition Fourth Folio, for $107.50. It was the beginning of an obsession that would consume the rest of his life. Folger rose to be president of Standard Oil, and he used his fortune to create the greatest Shakespeare collection in the world. By the time he died, Folger owned more First Folios than anyone and had founded the Folger Shakespeare Library, where his collection still resides.

In
The Millionaire and the Bard, Andrea Mays spins the tale of Shakespeare and of his collector, of the genius whose work we nearly lost, the men who had the foresight to preserve it, and the millionaire who, centuries later, was consumed by his obsession with it. “Effortless in its unadorned storytelling and exacting in its research, this is a page-turning detective story” (Publishers Weekly).

Beautiful FREE Pdf about Influence of 17th Century Dutch Painting on North America!

The Seventeenth Century is known as the "Golden Age" of Dutch painting, as the title of this book suggests.

When you think of books published by the renowned National Gallery of Arts, you might immediately think "quality." And this book by the NGA does not disappoint--it is very well done!

This free book was originally part of a packet of materials for teachers of middle school and above students. But by far the most significant item in the packet is this ebook. And text inside the book that is connected with teaching and teachers is minimal. Amazon sells the ebook, it seems for the general public.

There is a fair amount of highly-informational text in the book, and lots and lots of beautiful paintings. There are also many other wonderful, apropos illustrations.

Title: Painting in the Dutch Golden Age: A Profile of the Seventeenth Century.
Format(s): Pdf.
Author(s): Carla Brenner; Jennifer Riddell; Barbara Moore.
Publisher: Department of Education Publications, National Gallery of Art.
Pages: Approximately 163.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): Not rated at Amazon; 4.67 at GoodReads, but from only 3 ratings.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: $5.95 (Kindle mobi).
Book Description (from the Introduction):
Three introductory chapters, “Profile of the Dutch Republic,” “A Golden Age for the Arts,” and “Life in the City and Countryside,” provide an overview. Next are five sections on the types of painting strongly associated with Dutch art of the Golden Age: “Landscape Painting,” “Genre Painting,” “Still-Life Painting,” “Portraiture,” and “History Painting.” Dutch paintings of the time presumably offer snapshots of what Dutch life was like, but in fact they contained an equal measure of reality and artifice. Dutch artists broke with conventions and took liberties to create images that reflected their republic’s socially conservative, yet worldly, aspirations. The result was a vast body of work enormously original in approach and varied in subject matter.

Dutch artists also continued efforts, begun during the Renaissance, to elevate the status of art beyond its associations with lesser trades and to restructure the guild system. Patrons and artists discussed the fine points of composition, technique, and ways in which art engaged the attentions of the viewer. This connoisseurship (addressed in the section “Talking about Pictures”) spurred the founding of specialized art academies and a new “business” of art.

Within the chapters, “In Focus” sections look more deeply at individual works in the National Gallery of Art’s collection. These discussions crystallize key chapter concepts. You will also find multipage special-topic features that address such subjects as “America’s Dutch Heritage” and “Flowers and Flower Painting.” The book also includes a timeline, a listing of resources, both printed and online, and a glossary.
Comments: I believe that this is a legal free download, due to the fact that it was offered as a free backlist title of the National Gallery of Arts at their website (http://www.nga.gov/content/ngaweb/re...f-library.html). It has just very recently been removed from the list on that website, but they have kept the link, below, still working.

Get a free copy of PCI Compliance for Dummies, from the publisher Qualys, Inc., and save at least $44.72 from the least expensive copy (Used Paperback--"Good") at Amazon! In fact, this appears to be a more recent edition than the only one apparently available at Amazon.

If you are interested in this title you are likely a merchant who accepts card credit payments. If so, you will be aware that PCI compliance has to do with the securing and protection of cardholder data. This ebook has been updated for PCI DSS Version 2.0.

Here's a little blurb:
Get the Facts on PCI Compliance and Learn How to Comply with the PCI Data Security Standard

Updated for PCI DSS Version 2.0!

Complying with the PCI Data Security Standard may seem like a daunting task for merchants. This book is a quick guide to understanding how to protect cardholder data and comply with the requirements of PCI - from surveying the standard's requirements to detailing steps for verifying compliance. In this book you will discover:

- What the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) is all about
- The 12 Requirements of the PCI Standard
- How to comply with PCI
- 10 Best-Practices for PCI Compliance
- How Qualys PCI simplifies PCI compliance

This book is in the very popular "For Dummies" series. Amazon has no ratings for the book yet. GoodReads gives the book (the older edition that Amazon also sells) a 3.25, but that's from only 4 ratings at the present time.

The ebook is free, but Qualys requires a few pieces of information from you in exchange, including a business email address and job title. Once you supply the information, the website will take you to another webpage, where you can download the ebook immediately. The ebook is a pdf.

Here's the webpage to go to to make your request. You may be interested in knowing that Qualys also offers free on that same webpage, at the present time, three other ebooks:
Vulnerability Management for Dummies
IT Policy Compliance for Dummies
Web Application Security for Dummies
.

FREE Ebook (PDF) on Creative Photo Editing, from the Kim Komando Store!

Some of you--maybe many of you--have heard of Kim Komando. She is a computer guru. She has a very popular call-in radio program on weekends, writes a newspaper column or two, runs a website, and who knows what else. Next to her knowledge, her greatest gift is probably being able to simplify things down to where just about anyone can understand and/or do them. I am definitely a fan of "America's Digital Goddess."

Oh, yeah. She also owns a store. This is an ebook, from her store (the promo is co-sponsored by Epson). The ebook is free "until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, April 21."

One of Komando's books is sold at Amazon, but this isn't it. So, I don't have any ratings to share with you. IMHO, however, it will be as good, if not better, than any comparable book on the subject that is for sale. The only downside that I know of--a slight one--is that the book is a little dated, as seen from the book's subtitle, 2012 Digital Photography Guide.

You do have to register at (not just submit an email address) her store, and confirm your email address by responding to an email from them. But you do not have to give any payment information.

Title: Essential Guide to Creative Photo Editing.
Format(s): PDF.
Author(s): Not Stated. Probably Kim Komando and/or one or more of her staff.
Publisher: The Kim Komando Show.
Pages: i + 34.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. List price $7.95. It probably has been sold in Kim Komando's store for that price at one time or another.
Book Description:
You've bought the perfect camera and learned how to take spectacular images. However, your journey to the perfect photo isn't over yet. No matter how good a picture is, there's always something to tweak.

Fortunately, modern computer graphics programs allow anyone to spruce up their photos after the fact. In this information-packed, 33-page eGuide, I'll walk you through the entire editing process.

From choosing a photo editing program to editing basics, it's all here. Learn about layers, cropping, rotation, color correction and all the other tricks professionals use. I even cover how to make the best prints of your masterpieces.

I was going to tell you that I had told you in the post, but then I read the rest of your message. ha

You're probably like me. I get way too many emails per day. But getting on Kim's email list is probably a good thing. She (by that I mean her staff, which must be large) sends out a couple of emails per day that are enormously helpful. One contains some very, very good videos. The other contains news items. The second is so good that I feel that when I've read it, I really do not need to read any other posts about computer news for that day. It's that high-quality and comprehensive. The only thing that you might consider a downside is that she frequently sends out information about specials in her store. Some people, though, may not consider that a downside at all.

It's the way of the world.

We get an email everyday announcing that our local pizza delivery chain store has opened for the day.
