I enjoyed Battlefield Earth when I read it in high school....got a couple of books into Mission Earth and just couldn't do it anymore. Probably the worst bit of tripe I've ever tried to read.

There must be some terrifying hidden meaning in the fact that a thread about Terry Pratchett has turned into one about L. Ron Hubbard...

We are talking about "writers who are not literary geniuses" .

Maybe Hubbard isn't, but Pterry is.

I feel the same way about "Dune" that some people feel about "Battlefield: Earth." Never got through it.

The lesson here appears obvious: Don't trust Anyone. The critic may be more of a hack than the writer.....

Little? Heck no. It's huge. It's overblown. It's wordy. It's not good. It's not old fashioned unless by old fashioned you mean they wrote huge, overblown, not enjoyable SF in the old days.

Mission Earth killed more trees for no good reason at all. I would say entire forests died for that cr@p,

Terry Pratchett could out write Hubbard on a really bad day. Pratchett's worst book is so much better than Hubbard's best book.
