Quick! Who were the two most memorable generals of the Civil War? Right! Grant and Lee. Which one owned slaves during the war? Wrong! It was Grant.

The technicalities seems a little more complex. According to the National Park Service web site on Arlington House:
Quote:
In his will, George Washington Parke Custis stipulated that all the Arlington slaves should be freed upon his death if the estate was found to be in good financial standing or within five years otherwise. When Custis died in 1857, Robert E. Lee—the executor of the estate—determined that the slave labor was necessary to improve Arlington's financial status. The Arlington slaves found Lee to be a more stringent taskmaster than his predacessor. Eleven slaves were “hired out” while others were sent to the Pamunkey River estates. In accordance with Custis's instructions, Lee officially freed the slaves on December 29, 1862.
Much more could be discussed, but that might diverge into a topic for another forum.

Athens80, I understood that Lee owned slaves in the 1850s, and that he freed them when he accepted his commission in the Confederate army.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the slaves you refer to are the slaves I refer to.

And even if they are, you say that they were freed before Gettysburg, so I think that to an extent the idea is still valid.

By the way, for those who are interested, Grant's wife was from a slave state, Kentucky, and he owned slaves because they were her's.

The matter of freeing the slaves is a political issue, because it is intertwined with the War Between the States with its issues of states' rights, and others, that are still relevant even today. Being a political issue, that means that there is a lot of misinformation (to put in nicely) floating around on all sides of the issue. (Note that there is not the copious amount of misinformation floating around about, for example, the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812, because there are very few, if any, lingering political issues today that were involved with those wars).

Bringing this discussion back to the subject of books, does anyone have an opinion or recommendation about a book on the Civil War that is very accurate, and unbiased as much as possible, one in which people can place a high degree of confidence that it is telling the truth in what it says?

Scholastic Teacher Express' Latest "Dollar Deals" Sale!

Scholastic Teacher Express has what they call "Dollar Deals" sales periodically, and one has just started (it runs for a week).

Is anyone who is following this thread a schoolteacher? How about a parent that homeschools one or more children? Or a parent who just likes to augment at home the education that his or her child gets in school? Well, if you are one or more of those, I think that you will really appreciate this sale.

There are a whopping 1152 items in this particular sale! And, yes, all of those are ebooks and other digital materials.

The intended end users of the things in this sale cover the gambit--from PreK to Grade 12. I've even purchased some items in these sales for my own personal use--I've found that some of them will give me quick, accurate, and easy-to-read and easy-to-absorb overviews of some subjects that I don't have the time or inclination to study in depth.

In spite of what the name of the sale suggests, some of the items are $2, $3, $4, and $5, although a huge number are, in fact, $1! The prices in this sale represent huge markdowns on Scholastic's regular prices. Just glancing over the offerings, I see many that have a 90% and above markdown, with at least one being as high as 95%!

Scholastic has been around a long time. It was around when I was in elementary school, which I won't say how long ago that was. (ha!) Their stuff always has been high-quality. The items in these Dollar Days sales don't seem to be poor-sellers that Scholastic is trying to promote, or anything like that, but just some of their ordinary items that they have no trouble selling at their ordinary prices, every day.

Here's the linkage.

Book ABOUT the Diary of Anne Frank--Big, Highly-Rated, and Hugely Marked-Down.

Anne Frank. By Francine Prose. Rated 4 1/2 stars, from 35 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $14.99; regular(?) digital price $9.78; Kindle price now $1.99. HarperCollins e-books, publisher. 446 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Anne-Frank-Fra...francine+prose.

Book Description
“A definitive, deeply moving inquiry into the life of the young, imperiled artist, and a masterful exegesis of Diary of a Young Girl…Extraordinary testimony to the power of literature and compassion” –Booklist (starred review)

In
Anne Frank: The Book, the Life, the Afterlife, Francine Prose, author of Reading Like a Writer, deftly parses the artistry, ambition, and enduring influence of Anne Frank’s beloved classic, The Diary of a Young Girl. Approved by both the Anne Frank House Foundation in Amsterdam and the Anne Frank-Fonds in Basel, run by the Frank family, this work of literary criticism unravels the complex, fascinating story of the diary and effectively makes the case for it being a work of art from a precociously gifted writer.

Milton and the English Revolution--99 Cents (U.S.) and 99p (U.K.).

Milton and the English Revolution. By Christopher Hill. Rated 5 stars, but from only 1 review at the present moment at Amazon U.S. (the paucity of reviews is no doubt due to the fact that the book was published just last January); however, at GoodReads it is rated 4.10/5.00,, from 30 ratings at the present moment. U.S. digital list price $3.99; Kindle price now $0.99. Endeavor Press, publisher. 614 pages.
U.S.: http://www.amazon.com/Milton-English...ish+Revolution.
U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Milton-Engli...ish+Revolution.

Book Description
In this remarkable book Christopher Hill used the learning gathered in a lifetime’s study of seventeenth-century England to carry out a major reassessment of Milton as man, politician, poet, and above all, religious thinker.

The result is a Milton very different from most popular imaginings: instead of a gloomy, sexless ‘Puritan’, we have a dashingly original thinker, sympathetic to polygamy, even branded with the contemporary reputation of a libertine.

More importantly, Christopher Hill’s Milton is very different from the writer portrayed in most previous academic studies. To him, Milton is an author who found his real stimulus less in the literature of classical and times and more in the political and religious radicalism of his own day.

Hill demonstrates, with originality, learning and insight, how Milton’s political and religious predicament is reflected in his classic poetry, particularly ‘Paradise Lost’ and ‘Samson Agonistes’.

The Lost Fleet: The Discovery of a Sunken Armada from the Golden Age of Piracy by Barry Clifford - $0.99
Amazon US | Google | Kobo | B&N
Quote:
On January 2, 1678, a fleet of French ships sank off the Venezuelan coast. This proved disastrous for French naval power in the region, and sparked the rise of a golden age of piracy.

Tracing the lives of fabled pirates like the Chevalier de Grammont, Nikolaas Van Hoorn, Thomas Paine, and Jean Comte d'Estrées, The Lost Fleet portrays a dark age, when the outcasts of European society formed a democracy of buccaneers, settling on a string of islands off the African coast. From there, the pirates haunted the world's oceans, wreaking havoc on the settlements along the Spanish mainland and -- often enlisted by French and English governments -- sacking ships, ports, and coastal towns.

More than three hundred years later, writer, explorer, and deep-sea diver Barry Clifford follows the pirates' destructive wake back to Venezuela. With the help of a lost map, drawn by the captain of the lost French fleet, Clifford locates the site of the disaster and wreckage of the once-mighty armada.

GtrsRGr8 Christopher Hill is one of the great historians of the English Civil War period, but some of his work is controversial among later scholars. The book on Milton was originally published in 1977, see his obituary in the Guardian for some more information about the disputed aspects http://www.theguardian.com/news/2003...ies.obituaries. Personally I considered it an absolute bargain at its original price of £2.99, when I bought it the other week, though I have not yet started it.
