With the Kindle first thing, they sent my nan an email, but I'm confused, each of the six books is offered at £0.00 until until 31 August, 2015. Does that mean that you pick one of the six & they are lending it to you for free for a month prior to it going on sale? Or are they letting you keep one for free permanently?

You can, cool. You only get to choose one of the six, is this correct? Also, are they always free or is this just a fortuitous month?

You only get to pick one, but a couple of times they let us pick two. Usually it's one. And they are always free so long as you get it before the end of the month.

But if I end up getting a second one I'll have to pay the $4.99 or whatever it is for it. I'm going to wait for reviews to see if they all sound as good after reading the reviews before I decide which to get.

Amazon hopes a few of the early readers will write reviews... handing out a few thousand copies for free in exchange for a handful of reviews is still cheaper than paying someone to review new books.

... of course, each of us had to pay for the privilege of being on the access list...

Now I get why they're doing it. More sales in the long run because of the early reviews.

But I don't understand what you mean by this. I thought she (nan) just got sent the Kindle First offers because we got her a Kindle.

Six books this time ! That's even better. however I had an even harder time deciding. I went with "The Girl From Krakow " for free. Although I'm probably going to pick up "The Good Neighbor " for $4.99 and possibly the " Hundred Year Flood " they looked like interesting books as well. I think this was a very good selection of books to choose from.

As I was saying in another thread, I gave up on The Good Neighbor 25% of the way through: the "he's cheating on you" vibe was about as subtle as an incontinent skunk and I couldn't care less about the story any more. Some people may enjoy it, but right here, right now, it is not for me.

Thanks for sharing that Dngrsone, I would probably have felt the same way. So I'll pass on it as well. I'm sure others may enjoy it though.

In that case, I think I'll go with The Hundred Year Flood. There aren't many reviews yet between Amazon and Goodreads, but the ones I've read make me think I'll like it. It's just hard to trust reviews. I usually get a better idea whether I'll like it or not more from the bad reviews than the good ones.

A couple of years ago, I heard that Amazon had developed capability, with algorithms and such like, to detect a large percentage of phony reviews. I haven't heard any more about that since then. I wonder if Amazon isn't quietly using it now, trying to avoid tipping off the bad guys so they will continue to do the things that they've been doing, which things allow Amazon to do the filtering.

I think they're starting to track people across social media platforms-- such as goodreads, twitter and facebook: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/...ws-070615.html I don't know how widespread it is, though, because this is the only instance I've seen mentioned.
