Does Amazon require that download links for previous customers be removed, or is that just how B&N have chosen to do it?
No, it can't be available. Amazon exclusivity also precludes the author from giving away the work. Or so I interpret the KDP Select TOS.

The author has to delete the book from their PubIt account and that is (apparently) supposed to remove it from the B&N servers entirely.

Or so I understand. I'm published on Amazon and B&N, but I've never tried removing my books from either.

Ha. If you know a way to get into Overdrive as an indie, please share, because I so much want to be.

But if you mean as a hardcopy, that's okay. The exclusivity only applies to electronic copies of the book.

I would freaking LOVE to build a grass-roots indie conglomerate for getting into Overdrive and NetGalley. I have a real life lawyer who files business paperwork and everything. The hard part is getting people to sign up.

Sadly, I don't. I was just wondering if Amazon would allow them to be in libraries since they don't sell books, and therefor aren't a direct competitor.

To be honest, I think it's just a natural desire to be in control of your work and not be ripped off. The indies I've pitched to -- We can buy the ISBNs in bulk and pay less in the long run! We can get into NetGalley for reviewers! We can get into libraries by the power of Greyskull! -- have all said they'd rather pay $125 an ISBN and be totally independent.

I can understand that. It's not easy to trust someone you've never met face-to-face, and most of these companies -- Bowker, NetGalley, Overdrive -- do want to deal with someone one-on-one, as opposed to having a group account.

So it comes down to the usual "I know I'd be trustworthy and transparent in everything I do, but how can they know that?"

With ISBN sharing, it'd be pretty easy, because you either have the data entered into Bowker correctly or you don't. (And the data enter-er could take screenshots.)

With NetGalley, it's super easy, because there's no revenue to juggle -- it's just a means of providing books to reviewers for free.

With Overdrive, it's more complicated: are we expecting to be PAID by the libraries? Because uuuuuuuuggh, juggling everyone's 30 cents a month would be a nightmare. But if we could put the titles on Overdrive for FREE and use the libraries as marketing/charity...

But, again, you're basically asking people to trust you, even a little. Though my company does have a kickin' logo, and clearly that should make up for the trust issues. LOL.

It's a good question. The TOS says:

1 Exclusivity. When you include a Digital Book in KDP Select, you give us the exclusive right to sell and distribute your Digital Book in digital format while your book is in KDP Select. During this period of exclusivity, you cannot sell or distribute, or give anyone else the right to sell or distribute, your Digital Book (or a book that is substantially similar), in digital format in any territory where you have rights.

https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishi...34L348N#Select

I would imagine that library downloads would count as distribution.

ETA: And this is why I get narky about the "it's JUST 90 days exclusive". No, it's not. It's exclusive for the entire time you're in the program. It's just that you can leave after 90 days. Most authors don't bother to. That's forever exclusive. So, yeah, it's not just B&N fans being impatient for 3 months.

So you can't give copies to a reviewer or to a friend or family member either. That's a bit overkill, isn't it?

As an indie author about to release my first book, I was originally considering joining kdp select, but now, having read more into it, I think I won't bother. I'd been planning on releasing the book on all platforms via smashwords etc., so that is what I'll stick with. If someout only wanted to release their book via Amazon, then it sounds okay, but I don't really like the way Amazon are going about the process.
