I'm a bit obsessive about such things. I always ensure that everything in my Calibre library has correct metadata. It makes it much easier to browse the library that way.

Oh, I'm the same in Calibre! My point is more: if I can't see it, I don't care, but if I can, it must be perfect!

Binary compatible, kinda, sorta, not really. Compile something for ubuntu on your PC, and it will not run on your android phone. Different CPU architectures squash the binary compatibility right off the bat. Say that isn't a problem, you still have the dependency issues. Your average app for Linux requires a X server, libc6, then probably the GTK or QT libraries. Android doesn't have any of that. If you're talking about a command line app that is written with no dependencies (which is pretty much just simple stuff like "Hello World"), well, how would you view that since typically you aren't allowed to see a terminal? That squashes the idea of an interactive command line app. Plus Android has some security protocols in place to limit what can be done on a nonrooted device, which would include running apps outside of the Android java framework.

That's why Pie said "binary compatible on the same platform". Which is, I believe, true.

If you take that as being as strict as x86 Ubuntu 11.04, then you're right. However, even if you're talking about on a computer of the same architecture, you can still have binary incompatibility, due to dependencies, between distros. This is one of the problems Linux has had with gaining marketshare and support. If you don't use statically linked binaries, then when you attempt to run the app, it will look for its dependent binaries where they were located on the system on which it was compiled. There are some very common libraries that are located in different places, under different names, in the various distros.

If you statically link, you can't get any benefit from upgrades to the libraries used, since the copies of the libraries used are built in. So bug fixes and such will pass you by. Not only that but the size of your compiled app will be significantly larger, which if you are developing for mobile platforms that gets to be more of an issue due to limited amount of memory and storage.

I'm one of the Must Be Perfect In Calibre people. As it happens, I have other interests than reading, and I'm a good multi-tasker. I like to tab out of the MMORPG I'm playing or out of the book I'm writing (while I think of the next sentence) in order to tweak things in Calibre as needed.

I for my part see an ereader als a single purpose machine. Reading books, even in bright sunlight. Not storing tons of them on the reader comparable an external harddisk. So the 2 GB on the new reader should be more than enough (for reading).

But therefore this single task should be done perfect.

So, if the pictures are a good representation of the truth, I fear the most important purpose, reading even in sunlight, will be not done perfect.
Cause of mirroring surface. But man has to wait...

One month lasting energy is better than 2 weeks. At least in my case I got troubles this summer cause of the fact my PRS350 didn't last that long. We where for 10 days on an small south pacific island without electricity. The reader gave up after one week.

Using the wikipedia over WiFi (not over the cellphone net) at least for me ist sensless. Searching for definitions during reading a book has to be fast. Therefore you need (free) WiFi in the neighborhood. Which lots of people doesn't have.
A better idea could be to use wikipedia offline. And allow using free dictionaries, including an offline version of Wikipedia. But that's not the SONY-way and never had been. Too much freedom...

A.

Books??? Read??? On an eReader... novel idea...

Funny that those who have replied to you haven't actually answered your question... personally, if I can read my books on my eReader and store my books on my eReader then I'm happy...

Wikipedia offline usage is trivial, and readers for such exist. However, it requires much space, and is limited on updates. It is often easier and cheaper to slap in wifi and let you access it online. If I remember right, it is nearly 4 gigs for just the articles on wikipedia, no images. You start adding in images, and it greatly jumps to like 20 gigs.

I do. I don't mess around much with my books. I just read; and when reading, I don't stop to look up definitions or read articles. Nor do I search, highlight, underline, or bookmark. I read cover-to-cover and when I'm done, I pop it back into Amazon's cloud and fetch another one.

I'm content

Looks like the new sony will only be $149. Not bad. The Harry Potter version will include the first book for free and it will also retail for $149. I doubt anything but the free book will distinguish if from the regular version of the reader. Which is a good thing IMO. That way people wont be scalping these things for double the price on ebay.

I am defiantly interested at that price. I really like the look of it and the features.
