Here we have a largish shopping mall called "Pearl Ridge". When the mall was built, the land that it’s on was separated by a watercress farm whose owner refused to sell. So the mall is in two parts, separated by said watercress farm.

During the last renovation, the designer decided to use a NY,NY theme for the décor, so the mall has “Uptown” and “Downtown” sections. Curiously, the “Downtown” section is physically uphill from the “Uptown” one.

I've been there several times over the years. Always wondered why the mall was split like that! Another mystery solved, thanks.

Yes, but the difference in England is that I live quite a way from London and there are other much closer cities, but only London it referred to as the City

We still do call them "shopping centres". I'd never dream of using the expression "shopping mall".

I am the same, but due to the influence of the Disney Channel my young daughter is starting to use Mall.

I normally respond by pretending I don't understand her. When she uses Shopping "Mall" she uses the American pronunciation that sounds a bit like "mawl" or "Mul" rather that the English (at least in my part of the country) "Mal".

So the conversation goes something like:

Daughter - Are we going to the Shopping Mawl
Me - Uh, what sorry
Daughter - owh Dad! the shopping mal
Me - do you mean the shopping centre?

Poor girl, she has a lot to put up with.

Alas, in Norwich city centre we have two, and they are known locally as "Castle Mall" and "Chapelfield Mall".

(Although I see that the Castle Mall is now officially "The Mall, Norwich", and Chapelfield Mall is officially just "Chapelfield" or "Chapelfield Shopping Centre".)

No Malls that I know of in Preston right now - but we have rakes of Shopping Centres!

Not that I go to them myself, of course. Well, with one exception: I will pop into the Apple Store at Chapelfield sometimes.

If I go shopping in Norwich, I go to Jarrolds or the Market or the Royal Arcade.

I thought Mall was just a bit passe with planners now - don't they get all democratic and call them "Markets" ?

Named after the biggest kick-backer, of course.............

Actually, to be fair, not strictly true........

But "Tax-payer Market" doesn't quite tick the box, does it ......

Ooooer, I'm getting all lefty......sorry 'bout that, slaps wrist.

Do people really say "Shopping Mall"? Here we just say "the Mall", although sometimes we might specify a particular location. Also a recent trend that I've seen in several cities (maybe it's a Western US thing?) is to call them "Fashion Centers".

I don't know what other people say, my comment was restricted to my daughter. In the UK I guess it is still usual to say either "Shopping Centre" or the name of the shopping centre, like Aztec West.

I just thought "shopping mall" was an interesting mix of "shopping centre" and "mall". Like the American expression has sort of invaded the language of your daughter but not quite completely.
