I'm trying to stop shopping cheap and start buying quality. I have a few leather bags (black, brown, grey, light red, turquoise) - I'm set for life. Shoes I'm limiting to 2 leather pairs annually. Clothes is a huge problem...

Yer lucky! I always wanted to wear Birkenstocks but my foot is too wide. I don't fit into the side curve of the footbed well enough.

Even the wide-footbed version is too narrow?

I have the wide one, and it was comfortable. The usual one hurt me like mad.

I never was able to find any that said 'wide.'

I always felt that my hippie days were somewhat 'restricted' by the fact that I couldn't wear Birkies. I had to go barefoot instead...

I thought about that when you said you couldn't wear Birks. Glad they didn't throw you out of the commune because of it!

Most folks in our commune wore Mexican huarache sandals or rubber flip-flops. They were a lot cheaper than Birkenstocks. Truth be told, I wore the rubber flip-flops or home-made moccasins. I'm really too much of a wuss to go barefoot on anything harder than carpet. Deep carpet.

Have a look at this . It is the story of a little black dress, 365 days and how 287 indian children were able to go to school. You can buy various little black dresses there, all fair trade. And you will get an idea of how to make a little look a lot.

Oops, I did a bit of googling and realised Birkenstocks' two sizings were 'narrow' and 'regular'. Vanity sizing much?

Anyway what I meant to say that I wear the 'regular' one, which I'm pretty sure Birkenstocks stores would stock. In Singapore, the displayed sandals are usually of the narrow variation so maybe ask the assistant?

That is very, very, very, very cool! Inspiring, and I might have to have a second look at the local salvation army and second-hand shops for brooches and other cool accessories for some of the basic dresses I have. Can't do much layering with the climate in Singapore, or some of them would be super cool.

My favourite accessory is a compass necklace (brand new with Outfitters Girls tag) that I bought second-hand at Oxfam in London for 1/4 of the price. I feel proud being cheap! Students always ask if I have a tendency to lose my way around

Well people, after all that politically correct stuff I said earlier, I went to a Club 21 bazaar and got shoes and clothes. It's quite a nightmare.

OK, I promised a photo when I was next in my kilt. Apologies for the poor quality - an iPhone 3G doesn't do too well with indoor lighting. The kilt is in a tartan known as Roxburgh Muted Red.
