So looks like it's back to stripping that pesky DRM, eh?

How is the store part of the device in the same way that brakes are part of a car? I have a Sony PRS-950 reader with 1,006 titles on it, and I've never bought a book from Sony.

My mom uses her eReader daily and it's a Sony 350. She's never bought from Sony either.

An eReader is a device to read eBooks. The parent store is one of MANY ways to get eBooks on that device.

Pretty sure it'd be tricky to use a car without ever using the brakes. I call analogy police.

Alright, fair enough. It's more analogous to the sound system of a car, or a stock navigation system.

Seriously? You would pick a car based on the stereo or navigation system?

I'd certainly pay more for a car with a good sound system than one with a bad one. And the sound system is certainly one of the options that makes a car more valuable. (Check CNET's car reviews.)

Ah! Now, for me, it's all about the after market installations. I look for the sound system (i.e. ebooks) that have the balance of features and value that I'm looking for... sure, I may need to look into adapters for mounting the speakers (i.e. convert in Calibre), but it's well worth the extra effort to drive the car I like best AND listen to the best sound system I can find.

Mind you, my family tends to drive cars until they fall apart due to a lack of molecular cohesion. Same goes for computers and other gadgets.

This is what I meant by ignoring. You know that there are other ereaders out there, but they are not in your direct line of sight, so you didn't consider them. Don't get me wrong, I think that it is perfectly possible that given the opportunity to spend 3 months with all ereaders ever manufactured, you would have still chosen the kindle.

Not for me.

This is where we see things completely differently. You pay less for devices that are locked in. You don't really see that with ereaders because they aren't completely locked in, so you don't pay allot less, plus you don't have an unlocked version of the same device to compare prices with, but you see it in mobile phones: those that are locked to a network are cheaper (at least this is the way it is in Europe).

I don't care to purchase expensive electronics without first testing them out. I spent those 3 months lurking on the forums here, so I was certainly aware of other readers and the features that they offered. I would have been more than happy to have checked out additional readers IF they were in the brick-and-mortar shops in my area.

If you had the opportunity to test out every ereader ever manufactured before making a final decision, then I have to say that I'm pretty dang envious of the shops in your neighborhood.

Now that's an analogy I can get behind.

But I don't use the sound system on my car. I prefer my MP3 player and earbuds.

So I guess that's a pretty good analogy overall, in this case.

I do see what you're saying. I use my reader/device/store differently, but it's all good either way.

Yeah, I don't really think you can test drive a PocketBook 360 in the US, unless ya'll want to come over to my house.

And, I mean, if I'd judged my Sony based on the in-store experience, well, I wouldn't have paid $200 for it. The collections and PDF support make it for me, and you can't see that in the store.

The Kindle... I've used once. I don't feel like it's wrong for me to say, "Meh, keyboards. Not for me." And move on. I know other people feel that way about the glowing N1 LCD screen.

Hands on experience is nice, but not the be-all/end-all, at least not for me.

Wow. You test drove every car in the world before getting one? You visited every home and apartment in every country before choosing a place to live?

No? What a blind ignorant sheep you must be for "ignoring" all those options on something so important.

This is rapidly cruising right past silly to moronic.

Well, I'd seen youtube videos of the Sony's PDF capabilities... if I had the $$$ for a prs-950, I may have gone in that direction; although I'm not sure I'd be willing to give up my 3G and browser.

My toddler is requesting that I click on some random emoticons... the following has nothing to do with this post. :hel p:

ETA: And agreed that hands on experience isn't everything. I mean, there's a reason that I didn't go out of my way to investigate additional readers when the listed features didn't have what I needed.

I don't have a toddler, but I liked that so much, I want to do it now.

:2t humbsup

Ah, if you wanted 3G/WiFi/Browser yumminess, my PocketBook 360 was definitely not for you. So it's just as well you didn't come to my house and demand a demonstration.
