Maybe I don't recall but I thought that the new plugin tools for Calibre were able to handle Topaz books directly. My problem or maybe multiple problems are that my c: drive failed. I had Vista Home Premium 32 bit. The repair joint appears to have "fixed" me with 64 bit. So I'm not sure if that may be affecting things.
But I dragged a topaz book to Calibre. It added and recognized the format as azw1. Metadata shows. But when I attempt to convert it says "could not convert ... no suitable source found." I then tried the separate topaz tools. Which worked on my netbook. I try step 1 and I get "success" but nothing is created in the output directory. I try step 2 and it also says success but nothing results which is not surprising since there really was NO input file. I know that python has 32 and 64 bit versions and am wondering if that may be fouling this up. I know we can't discuss too much but... Thanks in advance |

If you have "separate" topaz tools, you probably don't have the latest version of the Tools. The most recent version of the plugin will show up as v0.1.9 in calibre preferences.
It's part of the Tools 3.1 archive. |

I have the proper tools. 1.9. Shows installed and I added my k3's serial number.
The newest version of Calibre. Maybe I've done something wrong (obvious). I was attempting to use the books that were directly downloaded to my k3. I created a folder on the desktop computer and copied the entire k3's documents folder. That I added the book to Calibre. That's the version I tried to convert. I will try with the kinde-4-pc and download from the archive. But I was hoping to avoid yet another copy in yet another encryption. Thanks. edited to add: Ah, the kindle-4-pc version worked fine. Maybe I was misinterpreting what I've read in various blogs and comments to the blogs. I thought I could use the version from the actual kindle and add/convert that one directly. Thanks for being there and developing these wonderful, if questionable (by some) tools. Last edited by FF2; 01-09-2011 at 02:15 PM. |

I have read all the blogs and tried a few things. Although people who wrote the blogs and readme files tried to make it as easy as possible, they make a few assumptions about peoples computer skills and skip some small but important details. On the other hand they provide way to much information and that confuses a lot of people. I created a simple overview of my findings in my blog (see my signature or my account contact info for URL)

I have read his posts and believe me, my blog makes it as simple as it possibly can be. I even made a video of it on Youtube. Search for "Starko Kindle"

Hi,
Alf's site supports many books types and ereaders and now has a very nice intro to get people going who may not even know what DRM is. Your video is for Kindle for PC only and ignores how you use it with standalone Kindle 1's, updated Kindle 2s and 3s, or Kindles for iPhone, etc. If you could show people how to add the customizations like fixed PIDs and Kindle Serial Numbers to the plugin, that would be great. Also, if you use a later version of Calibre, you should not have to do a Mobi to Mobi conversion unless your book has some strange properties. KevinH |

All i did was create the most simple no-brainer guide that anyone can follow, for a very specific problem: Removing Amazon DRM from Kindle books which you own". It's a guide, not an educational piece - one can follow it without having to read and understand things like DRM, PID, Serial Numbers, electricity, etc. Another positive thing is that it's all about books so it will work regardless of which device you to use - Kindle 1's, 2's, 3's, PC, Mac, iPhone, updated, jailbroken, standalone and otherwise... I even think my guide could be used on Macs as well, but since i don't have one - i can't be sure. And yes, it would be great if someone addressed all other issues you mentioned and wrote simple guides for normal people Thanks for the tip about new version (0.7.38). It does better job indeed. Unfortunately MOBI to MOBI conversion still needs to be done - because of the left margin Last edited by Starko; 01-14-2011 at 01:57 PM. |
