Because they use PDF (encrypted) and EPUB (encrypted) both of which the kindle does not support. The mobipocket that they use is also a special encryption that kindle does not support. Audiobooks are in some strange windows media codec that is also encrypted. The PDF, EPUB, and MOBI DRM is very easy to remove, there are PY scripts out there that let you do it in a single click. I do have a library card and can log in and download the files if I wanted to, but have not tried. They let you "check out" the ebooks for 7 days (if they are available, only so many can be lent out at a time), and then the license expires. It's just kind of inconvenient that amazon doesn't support these formats because they do have a very good selection of books. They have new releases from 2010, and you can put holds on book and get them pretty easily, with only a week or so wait for new titles.
Thanks for showing me this, it's an interesting idea that I wasn't aware of. If only they would do away with the stacks and microfilm.. between this and electronic inter-library loan there would be no need to ever go to the library =) |

And people have donated their books for generations, people have supported their local library, but what about the future ? It would be nice to be able to donate your Ebooks, I would imagine. My point is that it does seem that we have come to a new era, in which we may have more questions then answers as how this will play out. But that we span around the world like this, is very exiting. It "kindle" my heart a little ![]() oh - btw. a little twist - the very first Kindle I bought was for someone in the Bay Area, but had to provide some user instructions too - and I ended up here, still trying to figure these things out Kinda of funny...

Hi! not sure if this is the right thread to ask this:
I'm planning to buy a kindle, but still not convinced whether get a kindle3 or a DXG. Of course I'll be installing duokan, but first I would like to know if the djvu support is good enough, I mean: does doukan FW display the pages correctly? does it takes a long time to turn the page? What about scanned pdfs? I do not need annotating or something like that, I only need the pages to display properly. If doukan makes the kindle dxg a good pdf and djvu reader, I'll be getting one, I have an ipad already; if not, then I'll go with the kindle 3. Thanks a lot! |

( It may be enlarged, but if text + pictures, it can be difficult to move around, etc. ) Amazingly you may use a magnifying glass, something you could not do on any other screen. ( even tested microscope ) Hmm... take a printout on a laserprinter of the kind of page you are interested in, but reduce it to half the size ( you may even use the correct dimensions of the two models ) and you will get a very good idea of what you are buying. I have only looked at a few samples of djvu, and it looked great. Of scanned material, I have read some Gutenberg pages which was nice enough, maybe a bit dark - you have to remember you don't have backlight screen, and you need reading light. Hope this answer some of your questions. Lack of Wifi was a drawback on DXG Last edited by FethryDuck; 11-18-2010 at 07:43 PM. Reason: spelling |

@montalex - thank you for posting. Wonder what #6 might mean. Think there are some bugs I have not figured out, but perhaps it can be related to the "restoration bug" ?

For PDFs it's great, no bugs that I've seen, have not tried djvu.. other formats have some minor formatting bugs they are yet to fix, but it should be good soon. (This is because english text flows differently, I doubt the bugs are there in chineese).
Do not believe it supports DRM PDFs however, have not tried. |

I have no idea, really. We'll have it tomorrow. I searched around the Duokan site for clues about 3G connectivity, and it does seem that they are working on it. I've been reading in the Kindle OS all week, because I like my Geogia2 font, thanks to NiLuJe's font hack! Last edited by montalex; 11-18-2010 at 09:29 PM. |

When you move to a title with the 5-way control, just press left or right. You have a menu. Go to About, then you find password under ranking. And yes, you may create a password on the whole device as well. Have they used a weak password encryption perhaps ? btw. I have not had time to check it out - something else came up. But I think fonts and all that can be fixed, as curstpriest has mentioned earlier - I believe - things may work fine under their characters and they may not have spent much time with western fonts. The text to speech is also a bit dependent on the font and layout - it is more then one item that has to work together Last edited by FethryDuck; 11-18-2010 at 11:32 PM. |

Did some "hack" on free PDF books - converted it to djvu and found that - it was probably not needed. I just jot down this note, and may return to it later. Found some interesting books that is free - as they are bundled with advertising. This drew me pretty crazy however, it is soo distracting - I cannot read the book.
The solution however, was somewhat neat -just tried started to read one one book so it may not last- but they use half the page. If you simply rotate the screen - you may skip the ad, and be able to concentrate on what you are reading. This worked very well on Kindle-3. On Kindle-DX, I am using djvu instead of pdf. Have not done anything to the advertises so - they are equal. But I want to adjust the darkness level, which does not work. A possible bug. It works very nice on the K3, and I just tested darkness, and it worked fine ( note - this is my "sort of English - not the released English version )
