Back on OP topic.

Preparedness.

Does anyone with children actually "prepare" their children for emergencies, as opposed to telling them what to do?

While traveling we actually walked from the hotel room to the emergency exits. We actually opened the windows to the fire escape. Every time we were in a new place.

Thinking about it, that's probably why I do prepare for emergencies.

when I had kids at home it was part and parcel of their lives. to start with, they were required to have "emergency packs" at school for earthquake preparedness. the packs had food from home, specifically food that the child would encounter at home so that they felt comfortable. pictures of the immediate family, and emergency contact information.

whenever we went somewhere, like a fair, the first thing I would do is take them to a very obvious place (like a totem pole, flag, etc.) and we would agree that if seperated, this was our meet up place. they always knew what the communications procedure was in a disaster, which relatives to contact first, most likely meeting places, etc. as they grew up being accustomed to me working in search and rescue, they went on many training exercises as well as more than a few searches, so were extremely familiar with that aspect of preparedness

It's our turn on the east coast to have a big storm with possible blizard conditions.

Just got back home with more gasoline, propane, and batteries. Food is fine.

I wish it had hit us yesterday.

To those in the area - MERRY CHRISTMAS, and enjoy the snow.

my son had to cut short his Christmas visit in Virginia to get back to D.C. for ONE day of work prior to flying to Colorado for a ski vacation. wonder if he'll get out?

Knowing traffic in DC they probably won't expect him unless he's essential personnel.

Of course the way it works no one will tell him that work is canceled until Monday morning.

Lets hope for the best.

he is essential, that is why he has to go in before his trip
