Umm…. I just bought another Baen backlist with a 55% coupon.

But there's a good reason! My wife's just started using Paypal, and got an offer of £5 back in her paypal account if she bought something costing at least £1 in April. A free fiver isn't to be turned down! Even when it turns into a free £2.65 because the book I bought cost £2.35.

Anyway, it was the first one in a new series by an author I like (Larry Correira - author of the Monster Hunter series) and I already had the second and third (but unread) from other bundles I did buy.

But I do need to watch out!

Augh.. The Phoenix Pick free ebook this month is by Mercedes Lackey, and they offered the sequel (new last month) for just $1.99… I succumbed.

That's not going to help your annual goal, no matter how good a price.

Fortunately, I don't feel particularly tempted.

I picked up the Mercedes Lackey freebie, but not the sequel. Phoenix Pick books are couponable, I believe, so I can get it for cheap later on if I want to.

You are so easy. I've been warning you about $1.99 . . .

I'm going to get the freebee and read it before getting the sequel since I have yet to read something by this author.

Yes, yes you're right. I think this one was a mistake and I should have just taken the freebie.

I'm not even taking the freebie, myself. It doesn't sound like my thing (and I have a whole CD-load of Mercedes Lackey already on the TBR.)

One of the UK Kindle Daily Deals is a book by Alexander McCall Smith. Now, I really liked his No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, but I still have one of those unread, and one unbought.

This is the first of a different series, set in contemporary Edinburgh, and I really can't see myself reading this book within the next year, although I'd like to read it sometime. (I lived in Edinburgh for a couple of years, long ago.)

And so I'm not going to buy it! Wow.I wouldn't have not bought it a year ago!

Not that I'm going out of my way to buy books, but I'm curious which one it is? IAC, well done not to buy it. (Though if it's his Isabelle Dalhousie series, I think you're missing something good. The Corduroy Mansions one, much less interesting. I read the first, haven't bothered since.)

It's the 44 Scotland Street one.

And now I'm resisting the 12-volume omnibus of the Flashman Papers, which has suddenly dropped to just under £10 at Amazon UK and nook UK.

Bah. Only 80% off. I'll wait for 90%!

I'd pass on the 44 Scotland Street one, given your current TBR. As for a mere 80% off? Pah! 90 or nothing.

Oh no, there's another Kobo contest. Can I retract my last post about not buying anything else this month?

Well, the book gods have a way of saying Hah! to all my resolutions, but I think I'm safe enough from the current contest, with the possible and justifiable exception of buying the lit club pick this month if necessary.

Good for you, Paul! I find these are the most pernicious stumbling blocks. It's one thing to use a coupon to purchase a book you already wanted, but another thing entirely when the sale price alone creates the want. My worst regrets are purchases of this ilk. Indeed, my Amazon account is testament to more of them than I'd care to acknowledge--books I haven't even bothered to download and put into Calibre, because the likelihood of my getting to them anytime soon is so slim (and I doubt Amazon's going anyplace).

I'm safe from any contest for a long time. I already have anything I ever wanted as an ebook, and more.

Now I own 705 books, including 35 Delphi Classics (some with 30+ novels in them), and that is more than I ever owned in paper. I'm not even counting the dumps of several public domain sites and free stuff such as the Baen CD's.

Maybe I'm just not that much of a reader...
