I was going to quote you, KK, but it was too much trouble, so I'll just address what I was going to say and you can figure out which segment I'm talking about.

The reason you probably do that is that the electrolytes in the tomato juice help to alleviate the dehydration that comes along with being in a Death Tube. And the alcohol helps alleviate all the hassle with getting to and being in said Death Tube.

Can you tell I'm getting sick of airline travel, these days?

the one I was in started putting imported out of season fruit in it, that kind of irritated me. they also had recipes, but they were good recipes. all of the really good groups have waiting lists that are about 2 years long *sigh*

I was pretty clear on the alcohol part!. hadn't thought of the electrolytes bit, makes sense though. I also really do like that it makes feel full as well! you think you are getting sick of it? I spent 2 years flying at least twice a week and oftentimes 3!

Well, the veggies/fruits in this CSA are a "surprise box" in that it contains whatever the local farms harvest in that particular week, plus occasional baked goods/grains/honey/eggs/whatever from other companies that use local and organic ingredients. Having said that, you do fill out a survey ahead of time with your likes and dislikes, and they will try not to fill your box with something that you absolutely hate. This is my first time with a multiple farm CSA, and I think I'm going to like it better than the kind I was in before. It looks like later in the year I'm going to have a wonderful variety of vegetables. I can't wait for the heirloom tomatoes!

(And desertblues, although they are offering a fruit add-on right now with 8 different fruits that are NOT in season here, they tell you that up front. Some people really wanted to have fruit available thru the holidays, even if not locally sourced. Other than that, this is all local and seasonal stuff.)

and not to continue pounding this drum too much, but my belief is that the more local we can make producer/consumer interaction -- particularly wrt food and such (and keep the multinational corporations out of the loop) the better off we'll be in the long run!!

Good for you Betty!

Yes, I agree, Kenny.
One must help and stimulate the local economy. If I eat local food; I know where it comes from, under which conditions it is produced and harvested. And it tastes better as well.

We have a lot of vegetable farms in my area. I do like the farmer's markets but the surprisingly fact I've discovered is that Walmart is more supportive of local farms than Whole Foods. The farmers we know say they pay a better price.

A friend of my SO's younger brother was doing interesting things in that line. He was associated with a local greenmarket. He wanted to preserve local farms. So he'd go to the farmers and ask "Have you considered growing this? It grows well in your climate and soil, and commands a higher price than what you grow now." He would then go to local chefs who bought produce at the greenmarket and ask "Have you considered using this in your dishes? I have local farmers who can grow it to your specifications." He worked on boosting both the supply and demand sides of the equation.

I don't see the multi-nationals going away. They became multi-nationals in the first place because they had economies of scale and could compete on price. Locally sourced foods are increasingly popular, but will be more expensive by the nature of the products and the process.

And most of the stuff produced by multi-nationals you don't buy in raw form anyway. It's an ingredient in something you do buy, with the wheat in bread being a prime example. You might buy bread from a local artisan bakery, but where do they get their flour? There's a very good chance it doesn't come from a local farmer, as there may not be a local farmer growing wheat.

Yes, I think that's part of the dilemma for those people who are absolutely committed to eating locally. I don't have that kind of commitment; I would just like to make an effort to do it when it's feasible. Some of the baked goods offered in my CSA, for example, have grains in them that are processed locally, even if not grown here. I have a friend with chickens and I try to get my eggs from her, but mainly because they just taste better than the ones from the store. This is my first foray into the local cheese, but it won't be my last because it is GOOD.
