I might hurt my office mate. He is always coughing (nasal drip issues) and making gnarly noises. He is massively over weight, probably 150 pounds, does not take care of himself physically and produces a series of interesting noises and smells. He is a great guy, very nice, good advice, excellent worker but my noise cancelling headsets cannot block out his various sounds.
There are four other people who share the office. Many former occupants have asked him about the farting, hell people have a can of deodorant that they use regularly. When you ask about the cough it is always post nasal drip, nothing he can do about it. There is groaning from back and hip and leg issues. I understand that losing weight is not easy but it would take care of a large number of his problems. It is his life and I he needs to do what he needs to do for himself and his family. I just want the stinky farts, coughing, throat clearing and other such noises to decrease if not just go away. And then I feel awful for being judgmental. |

The coughing is very likely a form of asthma, though he may not realize it. Treatable. The farts? He needs to crank his fibre up. Way up. Fibre supplements can help. But expecting him to lose weight? Not within his control most likely. The studies are pretty clear. Long term weight loss is simply not successful except in a very small percentage of people. Even weight loss surgery is often successful for only a few years.

Fiber helps farts?
Agreeing with CRussel on the weight loss. My aunt had that surgery and only managed to keep off about 150 lbs. She was still about 100 lbs overweight when she passed away. |

He has asthma but doesn't use his inhaler. He knows he has post nasal drip issues but does little to control them. He develops bronchitis and other upper respiratory illnesses regularly. I know all this because he shares with everyone.
Essentially, he doesn't take care of himself. I understand the weight part. Kind of. But he could do a better job of not eating a ton and eating junk and exercising. Multiple people have told him that the farting is smelly and annoying. He just shows everyone his own can of air freshener. It is simply frustrating and nothing anyone has said or done has changed anything. I feel bad because I fear he is going to die far sooner then he should because he is not taking care of himself and he is not changing those patterns. And the coughing all the time and the farting is really, really annoying. And this comes from someone who coughed for two months due to pneumonia (twice) and the asthma that it kicked into high gear. So I understand how it all ties together and that there is a period of time that you can't do much about it in the moment. But he isn't doing anything to fix it. Sorry, it drives me crazy and I fear for him. |

ProfCrash,
You have my sympathy. The only thing I can think of that would be worse than farts would be air freshener on top of farts. |

If he is actively ignoring the facts and not taking care he won't die "sooner than he should" He will die just in time paying the price for his ignorance and lack of self-responsibility. I see that often. People getting sicker and sicker but actively pushing back every advice, personal experiences of others etc. which would help them. As if they would want to die. Or just blindly follow the whitecoats' diagnosis even if it says thumbdown. Because the doc said nothing would help - nothing would help. Some don't even want to try. |

To some extent. If nothing else, it moves things along faster, meaning less time for methane formation. (What a weird discussion to be having on a reading forum!<g>)
