Timeline of a Cold Snap

Winter settled over us on the first few days of December. 20 cm of snow followed by dropping temperatures. They stayed on the wrong side of -20C until Dec 9th and 10th when it warmed up to -12C and then nosedived. Bottomed out Saturday night and slowly recovering since. Up to -23C as we speak.

As the icing on the cake we lost power Sunday night at 7 pm. Outside temp was -33C and we had no heat. Power was out until 3 am at which point the inside temperature was 8C - thank goodness for down duvets, we were actually quite toasty. Much longer though and I would have had to turn on a tap to prevent the water lines from freezing.

Lesson: Even though you are in the city, prepare for extended power outages. Need to look at supplemental heat sources. It was far too cold to use the fireplace - it sends the majority of it's heat up the chimmney and sucks in cold air, freezing those areas of the house farthest from the fireplace. Your house can actually cool down faster by using a fireplace in extreme cold weather.

As an extra special bonus, this quote from The Weather Network:
Quote:
At one point on Saturday night, Edmonton had the dubious distinction of being the coldest place on Earth. The record low temperature of -46 degrees was measured at the Edmonton International Airport. With the Wind Chill, it felt colder than -50. The city itself was a balmy -35 degrees before factoring the Wind Chill.

Edmonton's frigid temperature was exceeded by a station in Siberia where the lowest temperature measured on Saturday night was -48 degrees. Edmonton's -46 degrees was 2 degrees off the coldest temperature ever recorded for the Airport. Set back on January 26, 1972, the coldest temperature recorded is -48.3 degrees. Saturday also saw the coldest low ever recorded at the Airport in December. Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights also saw record low temperatures for Edmonton Airport.

Temperatures will continue to be frigid for the next couple of days before warming up mid-week. On Thursday, Edmonton is currently expected to reach a high of zero degrees!
Ahhh.. Zero degrees. I can't wait.

We just got about 1mm of heavy rain for a few minutes. Then the summer sun came back out to heat up the dampness. Now I know how Peter Gabriel feels.

Cold. Still waiting for our boiler to be repaired properly (I'm not sure which Friday they're planning on turning up on, but it wasn't the one I booked off work), but they've at least bodged it so the heating works again We're due light snow tomorrow and Friday too

Hmmm. 'Farking'. That's one I missed. Now up to 1,694 adjectives to describe winter.

We were talking tonight about the weather, and I believe that it has rained here in eastern North Carolina every day since Thanksgiving.

74...raining cats and dogs...
It's been in the upper 80's here pretty much all week with near unbearable humidity. Will you guys up north stop hogging the cold fronts? Please send them my way. Pretty please.

Santa, if you're listening: All I want for Christmas is a not-record-high ... ... again.

That's funny. I was talking to a guy from Tallahassee today and he's swearing the same thing.

*Off Topic

I just saw on the news Santa got arrested for DUI in Sparta, WI. Guess that means I won't be getting my Christmas wish. Sigh....Now I'm going to have to leave out a wireless ankle monitor and add a fifth of vodka to the eggnog. So much for milk and cookies this year.

I have a country music song called Santa Got a DWI by Sherwin Linton. It's on a Rhino compilation cd from 1989 called Bummed Out Christmas.

I don't think we've even got 20 milimetres yet But it's unusual to get snow in this bit of the UK this early in the season. Plus it was freezing last night, so there's a good chance of it settling a little
