On Friday, I finished Isaac Asimov Presents: The Best Science Fiction of the 19th Century, an anthology of early SF that I've had for many years and don't remember buying. It was so-so, but, importantly, it seems to be the last anthology/collection in my library that I actually paid money for*. In my third year of reading a short story every day, I have finally cleared out all of the old clutter.
I still have plenty of short stories kicking around. I still have many magazines, lots of freebie collections and anthologies, some from bundles, all those Eric Flint-edited retro collections from Baen, quite a few out-of-copyright collections, etc, but I feel I have finally done enough that I can drop my daily short story requirement from next year's Challenge. I'm still going to try to see out this year, though. *I'm not going to count Century of Wonder edited by Leigh Grossman, since that is more of a textbook and includes non-fiction, poetry, and entire(?) novels, as well as what looks to be about 133 stories. I guess I can get stuck into it now, though. |

Which was a reasonable conclusion, although there was one unexplained plot point, and a bit of a deus-ex-machina ending, although it was a god doing it, so perhaps that excuses it.

Does the 2nd book get better? I found the first book to be very dry and lacking in any sort of charter development. Also, there wasn't much that actually happened. What we got was the search of a dead spaceship that was rather uninteresting.

I highly enjoyed the historical accuracy. It felt very much light reading something out of Wolf Hall. The murder mystery did not have quite as satisfying a payoff as I might have liked, but I understand why Sansom did it and how it might function in future books.
Last evening I read Fuminori Nakamura's The Gun, which was an interesting take on guns and gun culture mentality from the perspective of a country who's police fired 6 shots in all of last year. Started Ada Palmer's Too Like the Lightning this morning. |

Let us know what you think of book 2 in the series. I just finished Rendezvous with Rama and was going to continue with the series but was dissuaded by someone here who said that the first book was the only one worth reading.

I have to concur with the sentiment that the first Rama book was the only one worth reading. YMMV
Read through Nobody Gets the Girl: A Superhero Novel by James Maxey. Not bad, but not a top pick... Reading Tracker by C. J. Cherryh. I could have gotten more reading done yesterday, but I was distracted by a new game my brother-in-law introduced me to... |

I would say the first book is not worth reading.

I've finished The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold. I rather liked it. Some rathe interesting ideas to time travel. I won't say what they are are that would be spoiling the book.
I've started reading The Tall Dolores by Michael Avallone. Quote:

Still reading this.
Also picked up Peter Mendelsund's What We See When We Read at the library yesterday. Read half of it in about an hour and plan to finish today while sitting at the oral surgeon waiting for my wife. It's one of the only books I've read recently that I am confident just would not translate well as an ebook. |
