Love this series!! Totally caught me by surprise, and I fell in love with it.

Meanwhile, finished Bone of Contention, the third of the Madelene la Batard series from Cynthia Harrod-Eagles. Quite fun, and superbly narrated by Nadia May (real name, Wanda McCaddon.) I've been primarily listening to these because Ms. McCaddon is arguably the best female narrator of audio books, and without argument, my personal favourite. Unfortunately, the 4th (and final) book is a different narrator.

So, to take a break from that, I read the new Imager book from L.E. Modesitt, Jr., Assassin's Price. Less Imager, more Rex Regis. And set before the original trilogy, but well after founding trilogy. A good addition to the series.

You won't get an argument from me (and she's my personal favorite, also).

Finished this yesterday. Going to start right in on the audio of The Fall of Hyperion now. I read Hyperion in 2013 and had completely forgotten the plot, hence the re-read. Don't want that to happen again.

About half way through Death's End by Cixin Liu on the KA1.

Just finished "Wind-Rider's Oath", the third book in David Weber's "War God" fantasy series. Bought from Baen in 2004:

Quote:
In The War God's Own, Bahzell had managed to stop a war by convincing Baron Tellian, leader of the Sothoii, to "surrender" to him, the War God's champion. Now, he has journeyed to the Sothoii Wind Plain to oversee the parole he granted to Tellian and his men, to represent the Order of Tomanak, the War God, and to be an ambassador for the hradani. What's more, the flying coursers of the Sothoii have accepted Bahzell as a windrider—the first hradani windrider in history. And since the windriders are the elite of the elite among the Sothoii, Bahzell's ascension is as likely to stir resentment as respect. That combination of duties would have been enough to keep anyone busy—even a warrior prince like Bahzell—but additional complications are bubbling under the surface. The goddess Shigu, the Queen of Hell, is sowing dissension among the war maids of the Sothoii. The supporters of the deposed Sothoii noble who started the war are plotting to murder their new leige lord and frame Bahzell for the deed. Of course, those problems are all in a day's work for a champion of the War God. But what is Bahzell going to do about the fact that Baron Tellian's daughter, the heir to the realm, seems to be thinking that he is the only man—or hradani—for her
Absolutely excellent.

On now to a long-awaited treat: "The Painted Queen", by Elizabeth Peters, which has finally been completed and published four years after the author's death.

A good continuation in the series. We get to meet the protagonist's mother in this one. <LOL> I really enjoy the author's writing style. Just enough light wit and all seriousness when needed. Eagerly await next book available next year. Rated B [4 stars].

Started The Emperor's Knife by Mazarkis Williams, a free book I picked up somewhere. The reviews aren't promising but I am trying to clear out some of the freebies clogging up my device.

The Nix

Reading The Nix by Nathan Hill which was released last year.?i really enjoying every bit of it but it is bloody huge. Apparently the paper copy is about 750 pages. After reading Auster's 4-3-2-1 earlier this year, which was 860 odd pages, I really wasn't ready for another vast book so soon.

Meanwhile I have a virtual stack of Booker nominees (Lincoln at the Bardo, the Ministry of Utmost Hapiness, Swing Time, Monica Ali's Autumn) piled up and ready to go. reading in the summer is a great pleasure but I think I've gotten a bit carried away this year.

Currently reading a book on chaos magic, The Chaonomicon by Jaq D. Hawkins.

I also have some fiction going. Just started Russian Hill by Ty Hutchinson, a Mystery, FBI sort of thing but set in San Francisco's Chinatown to add interest.

Finished - a fun, quick read. Although the start was a bit confusing - the 'historical' stuff just confused me completely.

Next up: Gilded Cage a recent purchase.

I'll go further than Jon. Although the budget for special effects was only a nickle ninety-eight, the TV show nailed it. The actors had their roles down pat and the writing was so stellar (no pun intended) that the pitiful make-up and sets were easily overlooked. The big-budget Disney movie sucked. Marvin, especially, was a let-down on the big screen. He was cute. Marvin should not be presented as cute. In the TV show he was big, clunky, and looked perpetually depressed, which is how the Paranoid Android should look. I also didn't care for the liberties the movie took with the established story line.

BTW, have you listened to the radio series? As I'm sure you know, the radio series predated even the books.

Hey!! Let's get some action going! What are we reading?

Along with this month's MobileRead Book Club selection, I'm also reading a couple of audiobooks and Forever Erma: Best-Loved Writing from America's Favorite Humorist by Erma Bombeck. This collection of short essays from the late humorist is especially enjoyable as I recall how much I enjoyed her syndicated column in our local newspaper back in the day. Her observational humor seldom failed to make my day a little brighter.

Swype plus autocorrect is a deadly combination. It's Forever Erma, of course. I only mention it in case someone tries to act on your recommendation and comes up with nothing.

You're right, it is deadly. I was so intent on correcting the "Bombed" part of "Emma Bombed" that I completely missed the "Emma".

By the way, if you have Swype on an iOS device, try swiping "Erma Bombeck". I don't know if it pulls that switcheroo on Android devices or not.

EDIT: Etna Bombed.

Nope. Completely different mistake.
