Sounds similar to Richard Laymon's One Rainy Night (though hopefully Curran handles the idea better than Laymon, as I thought that book was a mess).

Bought the book. It was one HTML file with 50 chapters and no TOC. Not sure how it will play on a Kindle, but downloading the azw3 and extracting the ePub gave me a very messy file.

Floating Staircase by Ronald Malfi is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

I seem to remember this was intended to be a Leisure paperback, but it never came out. At any rate, I associate it with the end of their line.

Quote:
Horror writer Travis Glasgow and his wife, Jodie, have bought their first house in Westlake, Maryland, just steps from Travis’s older brother’s home. Travis is buoyed by the thought of renewing his relationship with his estranged sibling and overcoming the darkness from his past. But the house has other plans for him. Travis is soon awakened by noises in the night and finds watery footprints in the basement that lead him to the nearby lake, which has a strange staircase emerging from its depths.

When Travis discovers that a former occupant of his house—a ten-year-old boy—drowned in the lake, he draws connections to his own childhood tragedy. As his brother and wife warn him to leave well enough alone, Travis is pulled into a dark obsession, following the house’s secrets to the floating staircase—and into the depths of madness...

The October Country by Ray Bradbury is $2 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

Quote:
Welcome to a land Ray Bradbury calls "the Undiscovered Country" of his imagination--that vast territory of ideas, concepts, notions and conceits where the stories you now hold were born. America's premier living author of short fiction, Bradbury has spent many lifetimes in this remarkable place--strolling through empty, shadow-washed fields at midnight; exploring long-forgotten rooms gathering dust behind doors bolted years ago to keep strangers locked out.. and secrets locked in. The nights are longer in this country. The cold hours of darkness move like autumn mists deeper and deeper toward winter. But the moonlight reveals great magic here--and a breathtaking vista.

The October Country is many places: a picturesque Mexican village where death is a tourist attraction; a city beneath the city where drowned lovers are silently reunited; a carnival midway where a tiny man's most cherished fantasy can be fulfilled night after night. The October Country's inhabitants live, dream, work, die--and sometimes live again--discovering, often too late, the high price of citizenship. Here a glass jar can hold memories and nightmares; a woman's newborn child can plot murder; and a man's skeleton can war against him. Here there is no escaping the dark stranger who lives upstairs...or the reaper who wields the world. Each of these stories is a wonder, imagined by an acclaimed tale-teller writing from a place shadows. But there is astonishing beauty in these shadows, born from a prose that enchants and enthralls. Ray Bradbury's The October Country is a land of metaphors that can chill like a long-after-midnight wind...as they lift the reader high above a sleeping Earth on the strange wings of Uncle Einar.

Island of the Wolf by Douglas D. Hawk is $0.99 at Amazon and B&N

Douglas put out a few books in the '80's and then started writing again with the advent of ebooks.

Quote:
Kidnapped and secretly transported to the Canadian wilderness, five strangers are abandoned on an island in the midst of a huge glacial lake. When the full moon rises, they become prey for the most unholy of creatures. Stalked by a blood-maddened beast, the five struggle to survive on the Island of the Wolf.

Gothic Wounds Joe R. Lansdale is $1 in the US (Kobo, Amazon
Short story collection. Not 100% horror.
Table of contents: https://subterraneanpress.com/gothic-wounds-ebook/
Quote:
Gothic Wounds oozes stories of grim doings in the Southern climes of East Texas, with a few stories outside the usual Lansdale realm.

Meet real life horrors and old mythologies in these dark and sometimes humorous and satirical stories of adventures and mysteries, suspense and strange moments in the backwoods.

Get out your hip boots and your skeeter spray, and you might want to bring a horse and saddle for when the tales move out West, but most importantly bring your imagination.

Read about a bizarre mule race, a movie projectionist’s obsession with a beautiful young woman that leads to a violent event. Venture onto the Sabine River with Hap and Leonard and find a sunken boat full of death and treasure. Meet a blind man with a weed eater who has nefarious plans. Follow the path of a World War soldier returning home only to find home isn’t what it used to be. Meet a wrestler well past his prime who grapples with an opponent over a long-lost love. Go down into a pit and watch two brave men in a mad, mad world, fight for a championship that ends in death for one of them. Then drive on out to Geronimo’s grave and battle a dangerous bank robber. Then have a sip of blood and Lemonade, as we learn of an event in the past of one of Lansdale’s best-known characters, Hap Collins.

And there’s more. So, pull up a chair, seat yourself with a big glass of ice tea or a Dr Pepper, and have a stack of vanilla cookies close at hand for sustenance. Crack this book full of the unexpected, and dive in.

The storytelling water is fine.

The anthology SUPERNATURAL NOIR is on sale for 1.99. Been on my WL for awhile

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BRSKG1HW...v_ov_lig_dp_it

Sixteen tales that combine the otherworldly with hardboiled crime fiction—from Joe R. Lansdale, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Paul G. Tremblay, Melanie Tem, and others.

Here are the femme fatales, the tough guys, the down-on-their-luck detectives—but with a twist. Collected by Hugo and Bram Stoker Award–winning editor Ellen Datlow, these stories of the murderous and macabre will take you onto the dark streets of worlds unlike our own, where the monstrous stalk their prey.

Supernatural Noir also includes bone-chilling tales from Lucius Shepard, Laird Barron, Brian Evenson, Gregory Frost, Richard Bowes, Jeffrey Ford, Lee Thomas, Tom Piccirilli, Nate Southard, Nick Mamatas, and John Langan.

Quote:
The New York Times–bestselling author “pulls out all the stops for this exhilarating alien-invasion epic . . . One of his finest” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

It happened one day in April. Huge explosions in skies across the world heralded the coming of the Gorgon ships, sparking a worldwide panic. Indestructible, they blasted Earth’s greatest cities into rubble. Then, through portals opening in the air, came the skeletal Cyphers. And Earth became a battlefield in a war between two alien races bent on mutual destruction.

In Colorado, just over a hundred survivors have found sanctuary in the ruins of an apartment complex—and it’s not just the Gorgons and Cyphers who threaten them. They are regularly besieged by the Gray Men, humans mutated by something in the atmosphere into monstrosities straight out of nightmares.

Colony of the Lost by Derik Cavignano is FREE, but the ebook is Amazon only.

A while back, I paid money to purchase this like an IDIOT!

Quote:
A DEMON'S REVENGE... AN ADDICT'S STRUGGLE... THE BATTLE FOR THE SOUL OF A TOWN

When the children of Glenwood begin vanishing one by one, baffling local and federal authorities alike, the idyllic New England suburb becomes anything but a utopia.

Built upon the ruins of a lost colony, Glenwood harbors a long-forgotten secret, and when three strangers are lured into the midnight woods by the phantom of a Puritan boy, they discover the truth of the town’s dark past and must face a vision of its bloody future.

Together, this unlikely trio—Jay, an alcoholic school teacher, Tim, a wise-cracking new kid in town, and Sarah, a nine-year-old with a handful of imaginary friends—must find a way to rescue the town from a terrifying supernatural force to prevent history from repeating itself.

It looks like I "bought" it in January of 2019. It's not my usual style, so I'm guessing it was free back then too. Maybe you did the same?

Everything the Darkness Eats by Eric LaRocca is $1 in the US (Kobo US, Kobo WW, Amazon)
Quote:
An insidious darkness threatens to devastate a rural New England village when occult forces are conjured and when bigotry is left unrestrained.

After a recent string of disappearances in a small Connecticut town, a grieving widower with a grim secret is drawn into a dangerous ritual of dark magic by a powerful and mysterious older gentleman named Heart Crowley. Meanwhile, a member of local law enforcement tasked with uncovering the culprit responsible for the bizarre disappearances soon begins to learn of a current of unbridled hatred simmering beneath the guise of the town's idyllic community -- a hatred that will eventually burst and forever change the lives of those who once found peace in the quiet town of Henley's Edge.

Screams from the Dark edited by Ellen Datlow is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
From werewolves and vampires, to demons and aliens, the monster is one of the most recognizable figures in horror. But what makes something, or someone, monstrous?

Award-winning and up-and-coming authors like Richard Kadrey, Cassandra Khaw, Indrapramit Das, Priya Sharma, and more attempt to answer this question. These all-new stories range from traditional to modern, from mainstream to literary, from familiar monsters to the unknown … and unimaginable.

This chilling collection has something to please—and terrify—everyone, so lock your doors, hide under your covers, and try not to scream.

Contributors include: Ian Rogers, Fran Wilde, Gemma Files, Daryl Gregory, Priya Sharma, Brian Hodge, Joyce Carol Oates, Indrapramit Das, Siobhan Carroll, Richard Kadrey, Norman Partridge, Garry Kilworth, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Chikodili Emelumadu, Glen Hirshberg, A. C. Wise, Stephen Graham Jones, Kaaron Warren, Livia Llewellyn, Carole Johnstone, Margo Lanagan, Joe R. Lansdale, Brian Evenson, Nathan Ballingrud, Cassandra Khaw, Laird Barron, Kristi DeMeester, Jeffrey Ford, and John Langan.
