don't put it off a moment longer. On Sunday, 3 days ago, Mr. Hitch--uber-healthy for our entire lives, other than hay fever--had a massive myocardial infarction. He's still with us, through a series of lucky breaks. But, according to all accounts, he oughtn't be. A simple physical would have displayed the indicators that could have headed this off at the pass. Don't make the same mistake that he did, and that I let go because it was easier than arguing with him. Offered FWIW. Hitch |

The Vent and Rant Thread
So sorry to hear of your husband's health issues, Hitch. Men in general tend to put off going to the doctor until they have no choice. My wife and I are anomalies in that respect. In our house she's the one who has to be nagged to go. And if something's wrong, she'd rather worry than go to the doctor to have herself checked out. For my part, I'd rather know so I can know what steps need to be taken.

Yeah, WT. The women in my family tend to avoid Drs. I can't even get my mother to check her blood pressure and she is on blood pressure meds, as am I. She will (almost literally) not go unless she is bleeding to death. My grandmother had a cousin who lived into her 90s and had to be forced to go after breaking a hip. I have that impetus, myself, but I know very well that, with TS and BAV, I certainly won't make it to retirement age without keeping tabs on my health. It is true I still don't do it like I should but I force myself to go in. |

Men avoiding the doctor -- my father is the same way. And no prizes for guessing why I'm mentioning that.
![]() He's apparently been having vision problems (more than the usual being-blind-as-a-bat, anyway) for a while, but ignoring it. He "doesn't want to know that I'm going to die, if I'm going to die I'd rather it come as a surprise". (!!!) So... my mother dragged him off to get an MRI scan. Turns out he has (had) a tumor sitting behind his (left) eye. Fortunately it isn't cancerous. It is, apparently, benevolent. I've always wondered, WTF is a "benevolent" tumor? "Excuse me, this benevolent tumor is going to benevolently try its utmost to kill you, mmmkay?" Last edited by eschwartz; 07-16-2015 at 01:36 PM. |

@WTSharpe, @CC: Thanks. As you've no doubt noticed, while I like to bitch and moan about my biz, or this or that, I'm not big on sharing my personal life, but in this instance, I hope it will move someone--anyone--to ensure that they try to catch things early. There was NO reason for this to have happened, not really. It could have been caught, it could have been handled, without all the trauma (and ensuing cost, as well, I'd note). Thanks again for the kind thoughts. Hitch STILL wife o' Mr. Hitch, despite his best efforts.... |

Yes -- catch these things early if you can!
Fortunately my father just got out of surgery and the prognosis is good. But like your husband, Hitch -- despite his best efforts... We are still looking at a month, or longer, of recovery, and he might very well end up missing work for one of the busiest times of the year... every extra day, or couple of weeks, helps! |

First, Hitch, sorry to hear about Mr. H.'s health "incident" -- but very glad he's still here!
Interesting, eschwartz. My Dad is legally blind in one eye and over the summer, during an annual check-up, his sinus doctor discovered a "growth" (non-cancerous) in his sinus near the tear duct behind his good eye. Because of its location he refered Dad to a specialist in NYC. That specialist, in turn, insisted that a top eye surgeon be "in the room" during surgery. All turned out well, but it was ... interesting.* So, yeah. Keep on top of your health issues, covingtoncat73! * Keeping moderately on topic, my ereader got a good workout on those doctor-related trips. Last edited by cromag; 07-16-2015 at 04:42 PM. |

Sheesh, I go away for a couple of days, and everyone has a story!
Hitch: Scary, glad he's still here. cc: What kk and Hitch suggested and everyone else agreed with! Do go and do take care of yourself. eschwartz: Glad the prognosis is good. My RANT: So, a good tech resigns, does it well, no issues - he just got a great offer to move up a grade at a new company. Don't blame him, and we're all still friends. BUT, the corp office refuses to hire a replacement, insisting any new one has to go in the corp headquarters, rather than where the other sysadmins are. Which means he'll be useless, since there's too many sales, marketing and exec types in that office, and they're all high maintenance. GRRRRRR. |

Yes. I've become amazed--said she of the eBook company--how much of a workout my various and sundry Kindles had during our recent "visits" at the Cardiac Cath Unit. I mean, I was swapping devices like a hooker changing sheets! (Just a metaphor...). I even read on my HTC smartphone at one point, when the K's juice gave up (and this was an e-ink, mind you...). But Mr. H needed rest, not gabbery; so I was simply sitting in a chair, reading, for 5-6 hours straight at a time. I'm a keyboard POUNDER, as some of you know, so I didn't want to take the laptop (did I mention that I'm gobsmacked that everybody talks on cellphones, uses devices, etc., in these wards now?) to work, as I know my Thompson Submachine-gunner-typing would have driven him nuts.
