Ok, so my Dad passed 4 years ago in a very horribly orchestrated mess that my mom put together. She turned on me, had my sister turn on me and by the time my kids got there had filled their heads full of nonsense as well. After I had returned home and the estate was being probated, she tried to manipulate me into signing my share over to her and I refused. She once again manipulated my kids and got them angry at me. But for the huge cancer deal that I notified her about we haven't spoken since. I have however, gifted at every Christmas, birthday and mothers day. I've never had a word of thanks. I'm seriously considering sending a copy of "Mommy Dearest" for this mother's day. I could go for stinky fish, dead flowers, a broken small appliance. ... thoughts?

Shees sometimes me wonder about publishers. Today received a new book to review. The mail I got from the publisher is 11mb for a mobi, epub & pdf. The pdf's formatting is horrible. But the biggest bugbear I have is with the epub and mobi files, the pdf is about 500kb, the epub and mobi is between 4-6mb. The thing that bug me is that the epub and mobi would have been around the same size as the pdf was it not for the cover image, yes the cover.png is 75% of the ebook's (mobi&epub) size. Just changing it to jpg Tafter importing to calibre) gives you a cover of 400kb, a tenth of the one supplied with the book.

I'm sorry, but I guess my answer is "why bother"? Seriously. Do you actually care? After the treatment, I'd just walk away. If she wants to contact you, she knows your address/phone. I honestly can't imagine spending one scintilla of energy or thought on anyone that treated me that way. I'd say you've done your best, but enough is enough.

I have just finished having someone explain to me in another thread that 4GB of storage on an ereader isn't enough, because, as it comes out, he modifies all his books to add the HD versions of the covers.

Apparently 3-5 MB per book is totally normal and to be expected. Who knew???

Yeah-- Maybe if you just go quiet, she'll wonder if you've died, and she'll have to look for you. (If that's a positive thing. I'm not sure it would be.) Seems like its time to lay off the gifts for a bit, and just heal.

Well ..... what's the point? If you've been sending nice gifts, it's better to just stop sending stuff, than to all of a sudden send nasty stuff. Don't let her have a reason to think bad thoughts!

Limburgher cheese sounds tempting, though

Screw it. Easier said than done, sure, but simply STOP. Don't send her anything. (I'm assuming that in addition to the "nary a word of thanks," she's not sending YOU anything for Birthdays, Xmas, etc.?) If she's not sending you ANYTHING, in addition to the lack of graciousness, why send her anything at all? I think a loud emptiness is more eloquent than stinky fish, smelly Limburgher or rotting corpses of any kind. Why work yourself up? if you send her something rotten, in all senses of the word, and she doesn't respond, won't it upset you more? Won't you then feel compelled to find out HOW she took it? You're just buying in to the behavior. I say, ignore her. I have family that is like this, and not talking to them is the only peace of mind. IMHO.

Sigh. You guys are right. I just have huge loyalty issues that have quite honestly screwed my life up more than once. It's actually a miracle that I managed to get into the Army. The day I came home and told her I'd enlisted she told me that there was no way that was going to happen, pointed at the phone and told me I needed to "call the Army" and tell them that I didn't mean it. When I laughed at her and said it didn't work that way, she assured me that when my Dad got home he'd makeep sure it didn't happen.

Had a better look this morning, and the image in question isn't used in anyway in the book, there is a image that is used as a cover image. so this is just dead weight, removing it, makes the epub a 1mn file, which is reasonable for a 30 page book.

I also modify my ebooks when needed. My copy of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Terry Brooks I replaced all the maps and the cover, with scanned copies from my paperback edition. the ebook went from 3mb to almost 13mb.

Look at that attachment below. I'm just converting a few e-books. OK; I'm running a conversion of three Delphi Classics, each being 15K+ pages. Maybe not the most common task, but if I had more cores and more RAM...

Granted, normally my e-books are not that large, but often enough, I do run three or four CD -> FLAC rips at once.

I'm actually thinking of looking into a 6-core i7 / Xeon somewhere this year, even dropping in core speed if need be. I did upgrade this computer a few years ago from a dual core E8500 at 3.16 GHz to a quad core Q8400 at 2.67 GHz, and never regretted it one bit. I'd take an 8 core i7 at 2.4 GHz over a 6c/3.2GHz or 4c/3.6GHz any time. (If the prices are comparable.)
