Like I said, "chump change."

Well, it looks like the only devices that you can download Audiobooks.com audiobooks to are--guess what?--an Android or iOS device.
Listening is easy with any browser I've tried. Downloaded, though...

On iOS, I have no idea how to get the downloaded MP3s backed up somewhere. Which, of course, is by design (thanks a lot, Apple).

On Android, you have to be fairly well updated (they recently locked out my old chromebook, which worked for audiobooks just fine). I managed to get the new app running on my latest Tab, then have to dig thru the files until the MP3s are located (which have nice, useful numbers as names), the Share to dropbox. Works, just a pain.

Nook, though - no web, just device, in their app and good luck with getting it moved to an MP3 player.

The United States government is given a warning by the preeminent biophysicists in the country: Current sterilization procedures applied to returning space probes may be inadequate to guarantee uncontaminated reentry to the atmosphere.

Two years later, 17 satellites are sent into the outer fringes of space to "collect organisms and dust for study". One of them falls to Earth, landing in a desolate area of Arizona.

Twelve miles from the landing site, in the town of Piedmont, a shocking discovery is made: The streets are littered with the dead bodies of the town's inhabitants, as if they dropped dead in their tracks.

The terror has begun....

A Tapping at My Door --> DS Nathan Cody Series (book 1 of a new series)

Whispersync: Audible ($3.49) | Kindle ($1.00)

From the best-selling author of Cry Baby, the beginning of a brilliant and gripping police procedural series set in Liverpool, perfect for fans of Peter James and Mark Billingham.

A woman at home in Liverpool is disturbed by a persistent tapping at her back door. She's disturbed to discover the culprit is a raven and tries to shoo it away. Which is when the killer strikes.

DS Nathan Cody, still bearing the scars of an undercover mission that went horrifyingly wrong, is put on the case. But the police have no leads except the body of the bird - and the victim's missing eyes.

As flashbacks from his past begin to intrude, Cody realises he is battling not just a murderer but his own inner demons, too. And then the killer strikes again, and Cody realises the threat isn't to the people of Liverpool after all - it's to the police.

Following the success and acclaim of the Callum Doyle novels, A Tapping at My Door is the first instalment of David Jackson's new Nathan Cody series.

Hmmmm . . . . it seems like the author got more than a little bit of inspiration from an Edgar Allan Poe story, "The Raven:"
1. Because of the prominence in the Poe story about a raven.
2. The tapping on the door is very familiar. It's because Poe had at least one statement about a raven "tapping on his chamber door," or something to that effect. And, also, he talks about the same bird "rapping, rapping," if memory serves me correctly.

Of course, the author can do anything that he wants to with Poe's short story. I think that it's out of copyright now.

Quote:
Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff

By turns tender and terrifying, Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff captures America on the verge of political upheaval in 2016 and introduces us to a man who just might be able to save us from the oncoming horror. Yes, Bob Honey - carnival carny, sewage specialist, and government operative, among other occupations - has spent years in preparation, crisscrossing the world in the employ of a mysterious government program that pays in small bills. He stopped in New Orleans to help Katrina victims; traveled to Baghdad, Beirut, South Sudan, and elsewhere on sewage emergencies; and submerged himself in the Pacific Ocean in search of sea life - all while living out of a quiet house on a residential street in Woodview, California, where he sometimes disturbs the neighbors with the sound of his lawn mower.

Bob Honey Who Just Do Stuff marks the debut of a dazzling literary talent. With comic bravado and an urgent agenda, Pappy Pariah has created a haunting, hilarious vision of an American middle-aged man with a mission - a loner struggling to find truth amid the chaos of a political campaign that threatens to destroy the values of the country he loves.

Bringing Pariah's revelatory prose to life is actor, director, and filmmaker Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk, Dead Man Walking), whose knack for choosing nuanced roles and delivering emotionally rich character studies finds an apt bedfellow in Bob Honey. Penn's distinct voice - here, an expertly crafted tightrope walk between oddball jocularity and grave prophecy - perfectly captures the caustic truth telling of Pariah's message. With brazen and unabashed affection for Pariah's hero, Penn takes the story of Bob Honey to dizzying new heights.

About the author: Pappy Pariah was disputably born in Summerton Feathers, Iowa, in the year of our Lord 1960. He has written voluminous travelogues and articles under a pseudonym for many mainstream American press outlets. At the age of 13, his appendix exploded while he was playing flag football, and it was during treatment for extreme peritonitis that he was first driven to put pen to paper. This is his first work of fiction.

I think that I've got some of the details above incorrect. Anyway, here's one place on the Web where you can read the story, story.

Okay, go ahead and skewer me now.

Mystery Whispersync

Seven Keys to Baldpate by Earl Derr Biggers ebook Free, Whispersync Audiobook - $2.99

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P8KUDEA

After years of churning out potboilers, novelist Billy Magee decides that he needs just two months of solitude to produce a work of true literary merit. New York is too crowded with distractions, so he embarks on a journey to the loneliest place he knows: a rambling summer resort that has been closed for the winter. He plans to live by candlelight and firewood for the next eight weeks, with nothing to do but write. On his very first night at Baldpate Inn, however, Magee receives an unwelcome visitor. For some reason, the man is very nervous. Could it have something to do with the revolver clutched in his hand? Magee was promised the only key to the hotel, but five more peculiar interlopers arrive, each with a key. It is clear that the author is caught up in a strange and baffling plot. The question is, who’s pulling the strings? Magee hopes to find out soon, lest he turn up dead before he can start his book.

Earl Derr Biggers is best known for his Charlie Chan Detective stories that was turned into a series of popular movies the best of which IMO star Sidney Toler.
