![]() Turns out the hotel's wi-fi does not extend to the sleeping lodge we are in so I am borrowing my wife's iPad for a mo to do a quick catch-up. Did a 3 mile walk along the Monsal trail yesterday, and my leg/back is paying for it this morning, so I can empathise @Profcrash. Sweet Buxton water in my cup. |

Back from a successful trip up country. My friend is looking to relocate into a more isolated area, and there are few more isolated areas than the jungles between Thailand and Burma. We found a few place that he could rent. Now it's up to him to decide.
Me? I'm drinking unbranded Keemun tea and getting ready to wash 2" of mosquito repellant off my body. There is a serious Dengue Fever outbreak here right now, and having had it before do NOT want to get it again! I avoid mosquito bites at all costs! Golly! Are you really Andy McNabe hiding behind the Orlok handle? Stitchawl |

Water. I am trying to alternate between tea and water.
This morning was hectic enough that I said screw it and went to Chick Fil A. So a sausage biscuit, hasbrown, and 2% milk was 952 calories. It was a nice treat but it will be a while before I repeat that trip. Cooper ate a sock, we think one of Lucas's, which has partially blocked his digestive track. He had thrown up 5 times in a 24 hour period. We took him to the Vet who found said sock on the X-Ray. We think it is a Lucas sock because the Vet said it was small and we have not found any adult socks that have been ripped up or seen the remains of said sock in either dogs discharge. So we have been feeding Cooper and Caya smaller meals every 3-4 hours. Cooper has not thrown up in the last 36 hours (yeah) and finally took a poop (yeah) but no sock in the poop (boo). This morning was dealing with a Cooper who was restless (no throw up, no poop) so dealing with him, Lucas who I think is teething waking up and crying every hour starting at 4, and a kitchen that is a disaster because the hubby made fresh tomato sauce last night. Hubby loves to cook, he hates cleaning and does not clean as he cooks. I said screw it, I am not making my yogurt (cutting up strawberries and mixing with non-fat plain yogurt). |

"smells nice" and DEET just don't go together for me. Brings back all sorts of memories. Including the psychotic Lariam-induced ones.

orlok - sounds like you are having a good time, even though wi-fi is not so great and you have a few aches and pains.
ProfCrash - poor Cooper. I hope all is better soon. Stitchawl - I'm in agreement with Charlie. We grew up covered in DEET for weekend camping and just a tiny whiff of it makes my stomach turn. Fresh coffee in my cup and biscotti on my plate. |

DEET makes my skin feel hot - more so than just the oil in it. I presume I am somewhat allergic, so I stay away from it. Catnip is said to have some mosquito repellent qualities. I haven't tried it.

![]() And the moon came up,... so quiet in the sky And all the people gathered round while the band was a-tunin' I can hear them now... playin' 'Comin' Through the Rye' She was dressed in blue and she looked so lovely Just a gentle flower of a small town girl Then he took her hand and they danced to the music With a single smile... she became his world And they danced all night... to the fiddle and the banjo Their driftin' tunes, seemed to fill the air So long ago, but they still remember... When they fell in love, at the Roseville Fair ![]() ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAIAgdsF6n8 ) Good morning, all! This song was going around and around in my mind as I woke up today. What a lovely way to start a Thursday! To keep it rolling, I poured a cup of my new English Breakfast tea. Perfect! Quote:

DEET will do a perfect job of dissolving many plastics. Have to be real careful not to get it near my camera equipment. I transferred some into a small travel spray bottle once, then put that inside a zip-lock bag just for safety (fortunately.) A month later all that was left inside the bag was the bottle's cap and a few ounces of liquid... Time for one more mug of tea, the a visit to the Food Lady! Stitchawl |

Single malt is require to recover from thinking about Lariam. Out of Ardbeg. Out of Talisker. Out of Glenmorangie. Hmmm. Definitely time to visit the store! Ah, here we go. Still some Balvenie, that will do. Very nicely... |

Oh, and btw -- all the other things on the market that claim to have some mosquito repellent qualities? None have actually been shown to work in scientific studies. So, if you really, really don't want to get bitten in a dangerous area, stick with DEET. I don't love it, but the side effects are way less than the potential disease. And it does work.

Backpacker Magazine did a test on mosiquito repelants. They did the arms in a cage full of mosquitos with the different products. The products that faired the best were lemon eucalyptus, not the deet based. Althought the Deet did pretty well.
http://www.rei.com/product/828908/re...ellent-4-fl-oz We use the Repel lemon eucalyptus instead of deet when we camp and hike. It worked better then the deet based sprays and it doesn't have deet in it. The smell is strong but dissipates pretty fast. Never got a mosquito bite with the stuff on. We have used the Ben's with 30% Deet, it works pretty well as well. http://www.rei.com/product/800710/be...t-deet-6-fl-oz Working on some Frozen Summit. Cooper seems to be ok, Caya is loving the extra meals, hip is feeling fine, and the weather is awesome. Loving life right now. Last edited by ProfCrash; 08-15-2013 at 07:35 AM. |

I'll have a styrofoam cup of coffee shortly. I'm off to get the minivan checked out at the local garage. I don't especially like coffee, so I don't mind if it's not too good. But I have never found drinkable tea at a convenience store.
