I'm planning on a couple of Ardbeg 'slushies' [patent pending] followed by a Lagavulin nightcap ....
must play with the cats first - in spite of their morning 'surprises' on the carpet ..... [anyone want a few bushels of cat hair?] |

But my supply is getting low again. I thought I'd be picking some up this morning, but the supermarket's special offer was on Coke and Diet Coke, but not Coke Zero! 1st world problems.... ![]() |

Fresh cup of Sumatra coffee in my cup and a slice of chocolate cake on my plate. I have to make sure I have the energy to get some yard and house work done, right?

Quick trip up to Powell River today to get a1/2 of an organic pig that will be our year's supply. And a few extra jowls to make guanciale. A tricky bit of curing but the result is special.
A glass of Three Counties Zinfandel, and I even managed to avoid my usual red wine headache. |

![]() With a dollar in my hand With an achin' in my heart And my pockets full of sand I'm a long way from home And I miss my loved ones so In the early morning rain With no place to go ![]() ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJbD5rDGdxQ ) Good morning, everyone! A blessed Sunday to you all. God, in all her infinite wisdom, decided to water the flowers again today. Just enough water to require an umbrella, but not enough to slow anyone down. The sun should come out in an hour or so anyway. I bought another 100gm of the new "English Breakfast" tea yesterday. God forbid I run out of the stuff! ![]() ![]() We've decided to give ourselves a treat today. We going to lunch at one of the fancy hotels along the river. They have a buffet that offers four different cuisines; Thai, Indian, Chinese, and Western, with literally hundreds of different dishes and 2-3 chefs preparing to order or carving. Expensive by Thai standards, lunch buffet costs about $10 USD. That's about the price of a Big Mac, fries, and large coke in Japan. I like life in Thailand. Stitchawl |

A cup -- actually, a small bowl -- of ice cream to finish off dinner.
My daughter returns to college this week and announced that she would be making dinner tonight. She made a chicken dish in the crock pot. It was very good! And now, dessert. |

No, not at all. Although my diet was strict in the very beginning, keeping under 1000 calories per day and long, fast walks, I broke it up at least once a week with what ever I felt the urge for. 'Too strict too long' never worked for me. I wasn't born to suffer. So any time I felt as if I WAS suffering, I treated myself to either pizza, ice cream, a big meal, etc. A diet (to me) isn't about a single day or a single meal. It's about a lifestyle change. Following that line I managed to get back to the weight I carried when I was a 32 yr old tournament fighter, down from a size 40-42 to a size 33. Breakfast today was a one egg-veggie omelet, half a chicken sausage, and tea. About 100 calories because I'll make up for it at today's lunch.
So here in Thailand, normally I've been eating larger breakfasts than I did in Japan, but smaller lunches and dinners, and still walk as often as I can. The average Thai food is so much healthier than Japanese foods, with much more veggies and less fried foods, and half the over-all calories. I'm feeling the urge to walk more lately, and now that we've basically 'settled in' and I don't have to do so much shopping in areas not feasible to walk to, coupled with the coming cooler weather, I'll go back to walking 5k-8k every other day. So a big pig-out every once in a while won't do any harm. It's the big pig-out every day that's a problem, or sitting in front of the TV with a bag of cookies or potato chips every night that really causes people to balloon out. We don't have a TV. ![]() What we DO have is a non-leaking (finally!) under-sink UV 4-cylinder water filter. I had my first tea from it this morning, and the taste is fine. So fine, in fact, that I'm drinking my third mug of English Breakfast tea right now! ![]() Stitchawl |

Red Wine Headaches
Study I read about 2 years ago has made it possible to drink red wine, at least occasionally. The author, who gets red wine headaches so has a horse in the race, tried all the usual things to try to find the root cause. Sulphites, histamines, etc. Zero correlation between the quantities of any of these and the headaches. But, in the course of the study, he found that one thing actually reduced the frequency and severity of the headache -- two standard aspirin (ASA) taken with a full glass of liquid at least 15 minutes before the first sip of wine.
In my experience, this works about 70% of the time to avoid the full headache. Which means that 30% of the time, I still get a splitting headache. So I ONLY drink really good red wine, since I'm not willing to risk the headache for plonk. And even when I don't get the full headache, I often get a "shadow headache". And further on the study: Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen were both tried with no benefit. So, I keep a bottle of aspirin by my chair in the living room, and those nights where I want to try the red wine, I take a couple a half hour before I pour my glass. And cross my fingers. Fantastic on the non-leaking, under-sink, UV, 4-cylinder water filter, Stitchawl.
![]() Charlie - I've tried the aspirin and it doesn't seem to work for me. I still get the headache, even with expensive red wines. I have no problem with whites. Darn. I was hoping there was something different I could try. ![]() Fresh Sumatra (I really like this one) coffee in my cup. |

Three hours, 7,000 calories, and 8km later, we are back at home with HUGE grins on our faces! What a feed! Beef Bourguignon, Chicken Masala, Medallions of Pork, Rosemary Lamb, Rare roast beef,... and this was just 'part' of the Western dishes. There were a dozen different Chinese dishes, another dozen Indian dishes, Thai dishes, and even a Japanese table with fresh sushi, sashimi, and even takoyaki! The center of the room was filled with the dessert offerings; dozens of different fruit presentations, cakes and petit fours, and even a chef making fresh crepe to go along with three different flavors of ice cream, hot fudge toppings, strawberry toppings, and fresh whipped cream (that was the western desert. The Thai dessert table had fresh mango, sticky rice, coconut cream with different fruits, etc.) Unfortunately, it was all topped off with Lipton's Yellow Label tea. We walked home (about 8k) and are now sitting with some good East India Company's 'Royal Breakfast' tea! Total cost for this feed 480 baht. That's about $7 per person. Less than a Happy Meal at McD's...
