That was in 1993.... That, as far as technology goes, was a long time ago...
If planes are still affected that way, getting into one is suicide ! You can't count on people to switch their devices off... Portable devices are way more common than they where back in 1993. And with wi-fi and all, probably can emit more EM... I really hope planes can stayed unaffected by wi-fi waves, and all the way worse things that can happen during a flight... YES but Any wire of any kind, with power from any source, that completes a circuit RADIATES, on what frequency or at what power level isn't relevent, Fact is it CAN cause interference, it can block proper operation of any system POSSIBLY ! and that's the point, the potential problem, Do you really want to fly knowing your putting the aircraft at lower level of safety JUST because you DON'T want to switch off for a few minutes at each end of your journey ? Personally, it won't kill me to wait a few minutes, oh and when I was on an aircraft when one of it's systems failed(Reason Unknown BTW), It landed perfectly safely, BUT again, do you want to ROLL the dice on your next flight ? ..... Not me Thank's ! In the end lets not pretend this is anything to do with human rights, this is "I can't be bothered" and "No one tells me what to do, REGARDLESS ! " come on people just Switch Off it isn't going to hurt ! ![]() |

For devices which don't, or those which have a flight-safe mode which turns off their transmitters, the few minutes around take off and landing applies. Quote:

That's trusting people will know how their device works, think about activating plane mode before take off (else the phone will send wi-fi / gsm waves until plane mode is activated...). And people can't be trusted to do that... Quote:

Note that, while you can't trust *everybody* to turn off their devices, some people will - the rules will still reduce risk without 100% compliance. /JB |

I travel with my WPDN,Blackberry, etc and always turn them both completely off when the FA makes their announcement to do so.
No biggie. |

Who cares?? Just follow the directions..
I fly to Denmark every couple of years, and 10-15 minutes doesn't matter much on a 35 hour journey. ![]() |

I hate flying now because of the silly rules but I rather go along with this one.
A certain percentage of passengers are total dickheads. I know, that's shocking. And I personally would not like to sit on the pavement for two hours while the cabin attendants argue with every dickhead who is oh-so-special. Not long ago we had a congressman getting into a snit because the stewardess told him to turn off his cell phone. So, everything electronic, turn it off till we reach altitude. Hey, I can suffer with that shoppers guide until we get to altitude. I always think I might actually see something I want. I never have but I could. |

Exactly.
You and a few hundred other people are basically in a big tube that is constructed of components made by the lowest bidder and maintained by people who are constantly working short staffed and doing everything possible to save a buck. Turning off an electronic device does not constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Why not just err on the side of caution? |
