Orlando area readers just spotted
I just saw ~3 readers for sale at Borders in Altamonte Springs, intersection of 434 and 436
They were sold out about two weeks ago (I bought the 2nd of 3 they had), so I guess Sony is shipping more to the retail outlets, which is a great sign. I've been evangalizing during my business trips - lots of interest. Here's hoping this takes off... -Reading Nut |

I keep looking in the Spring/Houston, TX location of CompUSA. Neither hide nor hair.
The only place I've seen them is at the Sony Style store, although I think NatCH has seen them elsewhere. |

Went to Austin, TX yesterday to one of their Borders Stores. They had the Reader on display (showing a photo instead of text), brochures, 3 devices in the case for sale and also the $25 ebook gift cards. My main reason fo taking the trip was to get another Book Cover. They had them in red and tan. Stupid me, I forgot to bring my coupons with me
![]() I also went to Fry's while in Austin. They had the cradle for sale. I asked about the reader and they said that they had just received them a couple od days ago and had not gotten them out for display. What a shame. |

Okay, looks like most people who want a Sony Reader have gotten one, so let me just quickly give a note about why y'all had to wait an extra week before they were displayed in Borders.
As has been noted, the Reader was distributed to less than 300 stores. Stores are now able to request the device if they want to, I have no information about how long that takes. When we first discovered that we had them, we were told not to put the display on the floor as it could catch fire. I was not too pleased as the wording of the warning was very vague as "display" could have referred to an inherent defect in the product or in the product fixture. From what I hear--your actual results may vary--there was a problem with the LED burning out on the security device attached to the back of the display model. Which I found to be absurd because ... c'mon. It's an LED! NOW, about y'all who are talking about coupons and what not, I will tell you how I got my Sony Reader for under $300. We have this great customer loyalty program called Borders Rewards. It's a free program, and you should join right now. (1) most coupons require Borders Rewards membership. If you find a coupon that says "x% off of one item" than you can use this coupon off of the Sony Reader. It counts as electronics, and in the fine print all % off coupons limit the discount to ten percent off. (2) if you have already registered your card and have spent at least $50 in the previous month, you can use a Personal Shopping Day on this transaction. That will deduct 10% off from the total. (Other exemptions apply). If you've done the math, I got mine for 19% off. And then Borders Rewards also gives you Holiday Rewards which means that 5% of your purchase can be used to buy things. Which can be used (at a later point) on a cover, cradle, OR a card that can be used on the CONNECT store. Any questions? Probably can't answer them ;-) |

Just one question, Evil Rabbit. I'm getting the impression that you work for Borders?
![]() Just wanted a context to put your comments on the LED thing into, you see. Thanks for that info, BTW, it's good to have an actual answer as to what the deal was. I can see it now: LED (probably red or amber) slags, releasing smoke, as they will do. Observer sees smoke + light (probably flickering) -- gasp -- must equal fire! LOL Putting this with other bits of info I've seen around, I can only guess that somebody maybe forgot to make sure the security system or display power supply was rated properly for the electronics it fed (or should that be fried?). ![]() |

Yeah, that's what the we was indicating. BTW, we're not monkeys. They just didn't have much to say, didn't tell us, and now ... hopefully everybody can parrot what little there is to say.
Please note that somebody (not one of ours) came around to each display, and switched out the parts. |

NatCh, he's evil_bunny, not Evil Rabbit! As we all know, the real evil rabbit is in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". Evil Bunny is a dictatorial DJ, while the evil rabbit killed a slew of knights. Everyone knows a rabbit is more dangerous than a bunny!
![]() (And before you say it, let me add Bugs Bunny is very mischievious, but not a killer.) ![]() |

Now, I just have to wait for GSO to start selling the Reader so I can see what the hullabaloo was all about...

![]() Thanks, William. You know, I read 'bunny,' mentioned 'bunny' to others I talked to about it, but for some reason my fingers typed 'rabbit.' Maybe my fingers have been watching too much Monty Python. ![]() Sorry 'bout that, evil_bunny, it was a (probably Freudian) slip. ![]() |

Willy G: In the interest of science, or at least semantics, I must state that I find your distinction lacking.
To my knowledge--which I will admit is limited--bunnies and rabbits are the same thing, just viewed at different points in the time line. Ponies & Horses are technically different animals, distince species as it were. The bunny/rabbit issue is analogous to horse/horsey a la Cheese from Foster's. Yes, this has little or nothin to do with the SONY Reader and physical locations to purchase said device, but I don't want any impressionables (like kids & non-voters) to get the wrong idea from these posts. The Kids in Kansas have enough trouble without being led astry regarding long-eared vermin. ;-0 |
