No, because I cannot download the attachment. Gives a server error.

Thank you both for the help.

However, I do have a follow-up to the keyboard issue.

So is the problem a software issue or a hardware issue? From what little I know about USB hardware you can make a port that will only accept USB keys but is crippled for any other uses.

If its a hardware issue, it will be impossible to fix. If its a software issue it'll just take some time until someone considerably smarter than I comes to a solution.

i dont know, if its a hardware problem, or if it is just a software thing, but i would guess, its just a matter of a device driver. But i dont know, how the keystokes are handled internally. But some clever person will figure it out, now we have full root access to the machine.

What? It does precisely nothing for me.

How does it work? Load the pdf, double-click a link with the stylus? Do I need to manually force a screen-update? How do I do that?

Hey Guys,
great work so far! Root Access to the Iliad, what do we want more, apart from WPA Encryption and a VPN Access ^^

To answer your question Ali:
With a double click to the link you spawn a question dialog which is only visible after you do a manual page refresh, e.g. by clicking the keyboard button.

After you've confirmed the dialog you may access the iliad via a ssh-connection by using username: root and no password.

Hope that helps.

Keep up the good work!

BTW:
Don't you think it's time to split this thread? I found it very hard to find the information i wanted so I read the whole thread. And as is keeps growing steadily that won't be so easy in a matter of time...

Browsing the list of modules you posted earlier, the module to control an USB keyboard isn't loaded.

You can try something like this:

modprobe ehci-hcd
modprobe uhci-hcd

And then test if the USB keyboard works.

(the HCD driver is for both keyboard and mice, AFAIK).

OTOH, I managed to modify the tex file from arivero so that it outputs an A5 page. It uses LaTeX instead of plain TeX, so you have to use "pdflatex launch4-a5.tex" to generate the pdf:
Attached Files
File Type: txt launch4-a5.tex.txt (1.8 KB, 481 views)
File Type: pdf launch4-a5.pdf (10.9 KB, 494 views)

Great teamworking, I'd say. Actually I was out home this morning, so I missed the compilation of the new pdf file. For starters, it is to be compiled with pdftex (or pdflatex in the new version), not with tex. You can add icons if you wish, simply standard tex thing.

A good point: NOBODY SHOULD TRY the root access if the machine is in a huge local network, vulnerable to worm attacks from other machines. Any worm nearby can guess the password.

Well abstracted. I was wondering why the pdf was not working in the first attempt; interesting to know that they do not refresh the screen at every change, this is a curious portability issue.

Hope that helps.

I guess we will have to find out, how the screen gets refreshed
And how to get access to the buttons, and how to make our own interface
ok, its going to my head

AFAIK Xlib doesn't have a "commit", so the X server doesn't know when screen drawing is finished. You need to tell it manually that drawing is finished and an update has to be done (like curses/ncurses).

maybe they have an /usr/bin/updatescreen.sh

That was really, really great work. Especially using a pdf for launching applications - a great idea.
