Ah, OK. I only have (with Netronix hardware) a Gen3 and an eSlick reader - both have custom firmware (eSlick does pretty well on PDFs - no real surprise there). Both also supply their GPL software on their websites.
It would be good to get the Netronix software, if only as a reference source. OTOH, the Netronix boards seem to be pretty customizable, so I hope they supply complete configuration instructions. And they have at least four 6" versions... |

I installed their new firmware on the weekend. The installation interface looks much more professional this time, good to know they know a lot of the users are tech educated people. Odd thing was, just two weeks before the firmware release, I written to BOTH netronix and Cooler to press them for newer firmware as I have noticed other eb-600 based brands has newer firmwares out much more frequent than the Cooler. Unlike last time however, they did not attach a update log, so i had no idea what has been changed or any new function added, especially a few i suggest should have been included: ie. jpeg zoom (where a 200 mhz phone cpu can do, the cooler with a 400 mhz cpu and a lot more ram can't). What i notice was, page turning is a lot faster, but ink grey level has some minor issues from page to page, some area the text was not as dark as before. New bugs quickly surfaced, it crashed on a rtf file which in previous version it worked fine. anyone found out any new functions? |

Lack of re-opening the last book you were reading makes me sad.

![]() they have indeed took that function away, however, they still put a auto remember on the page of that book you last read, YET IT will take you some time to find the book again... so... WHy took away that old handy function indeed!! NOT HAPPY!! give us the 20 or so seconds (time needed to return to the book) back! ![]() SOme one write to netronix and complain!!! (i will write to them for sure!) |

I've emailed them to ask for changelog information, and queried when this function might be coming back. For now, I've just downgraded to the previous version (which can be found here if anyone is interested)
I've got a feeling taking that function away was intentional - for example if you try to load a book that crashes your reader and it resets, it'll go into a loop of trying to open that same book and crashing. This way, at least if there is a problem you're back at a usable menu. I tend to keep all of my books on the SD card, so if something were to crash and it goes into a reboot loop I can just pull out the SD card and it won't try to open the corrupt book. |

Ho by the way, I heard that Netronix have a failover of at least 10% of their production, that's really a lot of devices...

For the FRBook (one more Netronix clone) they did release 1.12.9 early and in two versions: with and without last book opening.

When i speak of failover it's not during use of the device, but the number of board that are trashed during the fabrication process

They already over stretched their production capacity with all these brands they are producing for. What they are banking on was Taiwan government's support to the industry, so until government funding and tax break stops, they will survive. AUO is gearing up for their 3 / 4th generation panel production lines to focus on massive production (compare in volume produce by existing makers) reader panels. expect reader price to go down fast in mid 2010... BUT i think it is the software that needs to be enhanced... I still waiting for a reader that can read PDF like my smart phone can.... a bit: ![]() ![]() Last edited by jackau; 12-08-2009 at 06:25 PM. |

Netronix is a small company...
AUO is on their 3rd or 4th? are you sure? I was thinking that the BenQ use "1st" generation since there was no device using it before. And eInk is surely not on their "1st" generation |

Flashing Firmware update without a SD card
Is it possible, I assume it should be, to flash the Cool-ers firmware update without using a SD card? I suppose I could dig one up but I don't have one and my computer has no SD card reader on it.
I am assuming I should be able to flash it without it? Anyone know if they have instructions somewhere on how to do it? The only ones I found at Cool-ers website was the following: http://www.coolreaders.com/fw.asp Though I did like that they had a video showing how to do the update. Amy |
