Glad to know your cybook's working fine with the new firmware!

Actually after playing a bit with the folder structure I also obtained a reduced boot time: it currently boots in 22-24s (I only did two timings).
In my case I think it may be because I put most of my books (I currently have 60+ books) outside of the dedicated 'eBooks' folder. I had done it to try to reduce dictionary lookup time (it didn't work), but it may also decrease startup time because it scans fewer books at startup.

I'm a bit lazy of trying to put my books back in the eBooks folder and see if this changes the startup time. If some people are interested I'll try to do some evaluations in the future.

So Cybook's up to V1.4 Build923...

And yet we cannot seem to get a new firmware update!

23 seconds is a standard bootup time for me with the OLD firmware 1.2. So I don't get it why you're all so psyched about this.

For me it used to be around 35s with the previous firmware, so a bit less than 25 seconds is a significant improvement.
I seem to remember reading elsewhere that different cybooks will have different startup time, I wonder why that is...

Different hardware I guess, bootup has to be faster with 32 mb ram and 400 mhz compared to 16 mb ram and 200 mhz.
Although I have the latter configuration, it still boots fast.

It depends on how many books you have in your library.

Thanks for coming here Michael.

Personally the new firmware is a huge step forward for me. Folder support is the holy grail for my Cybook.

The delete button I'm not too pleased about. I can't think of an instance where I'd want to delete a book if I wasn't ready to put something else on... and if I was ready to put something else on then I'd be at a PC where I could delete stuff anyway. It doesn't bother me unless I accidentally delete a book I'm halfway through when away from a PC.

Perhaps we'll get to a point where the Cybook is loaded with two firmwares and it'll default to ePub but we can hold down a key and it'll load the alternative firmware instead.

Harry puts me to shame by looking up a dictionary so often. I seldom find the need to, and while I'd like to think it's because I'm far more literate, I suspect it's because he doesn't read the mindless trash I do :P

Actually when I need to look up a word I still use my old book dictionary. It's one thing I love books for: browsing.
As soon as I searched for the word I look left and right or one page back and forth to give a look at the other entries. Something I can't do on the Mobipocket (or any other) digital dictionary, that's why I hardly use it.

About the "mindless thrash": As long as you enjoy it, who cares? I've got dozens of German pulp novels on my reading list.

Oh, back to the topic - anyone got any notice about a more tangible release date?

Ah yes, that's the one frustration I have about e-books.

Of course you can. When you look up a word in a Mobi dictionary on the CyBook, it takes you to the dictionary page containing the entry you've looked up. It's just a book, so you can page backwards and forwards though it like any other book, look up additional words, and so on.

It is so slow so I would not call that browsing. looking at 50 entries would take an eternity. Looking at 50 entries at a page in a paper dictionary will take a copuld of seconds to see if something looks interesting.

I'm talking about READING a dictionary, once you've looked up a word, not making multiple look-ups in it. Paging through a dictionary is no slower than paging through any other book.

Then you should not have commented the text that talked about browsing. You can fool people when you write "of course you can do" as a comment of a text about browsing.

To "browse" a book means to "look through it", Tommy. Perhaps you misunderstand the meaning of the word?

No I am not misunderstanding what "browse a dictionary" means. I know what you do when you browse a dictionary and what the OP was referring to.

And i would say that browse a book does not just mean "look through it". If it takes 10 years to look through the book it is not browsing for example. There is an upper limit how slow something can be and still be called browsing a book.
