The way you've quoted my post gets all all wrong. What you quoted DOES exist in the ePub. It was the other mentioned error that I said didn't exist.

here's a couple of more errors in the kindle edition of the trilogy (i didn't buy, these are just from the sample i downloaded today):

at 221-229, "...a romance between Aragorn and E (MISSING TEXT HERE) that Tolkien wrote...". this is bad.

at location 300, there is space between N and the rest of Numenorean which causes an incorrect break. this is kind of minor, i know.

Sorry, I meant to delete your last line. But my point still stands. It appears that the editorial error in the "Shadow of the Past" chapter is likely to exist across all of the e-editions, and we ought to discuss this and other findings in a device-neutral forum.

got this reply from amazon customer service:

I’m sorry there's a problem with this title. I have confirmed the errors you reported and processed this information for correction.

If you are still interested in purchasing a working copy, please visit the Kindle store again at a later time and see if a corrected version is available by testing the sample again.

Thanks for using Kindle.

It would be really great if Amazon would have some method of indicating that a title has been updated -- either on the page itself, or by email to those who have purchased it. It's a waste of the bandwidth their paying for to have people re-downloading a book every day to see if a new version has been posted.

What I want to know is how do the various eBook sellers let us know when there is a new version? Plus, if a new version is in the works, it would be nice to know so we can stop reading the copy we have and wait for a fixed edition.

just got off the phone with amazon kindle support about this. i found more two more errors at locations 457-464, and i've concluded that the problem is probably pervasive throughout the book. it seems that any time a word appears that contain an accented vowel, the text loses between 18 and 20 of the following characters.

the kindle support person was very nice and looked at the examples i pointed out to her. she speculated that amazon will probably pull the book and have the publisher run through it and try to get it corrected.

i asked how it will work for people who have already bought the book: will they be notified? or will amazon simply automatically push another copy to the kindle? well, neither of these options unfortunately. anyone who wants a corrected copy will have to apply for a refund and then repurchase the corrected copy when it becomes available. that's unfortunate. an automatic push seems like a good idea to me.

just for laughs, i downloaded the sample of the fellowship of the ring to see if the problems are also present in that text. they are not!

This hasn't been the case in the past. For those who have kept the flawed version, they can simply download a new version. I wonder if the CS person was wrong, or if Amazon has changed its policy.

If this is a change, it's a pretty stupid one. It's a lot more labor intensive on their part to process all those refunds.

According to another thread, if you don't ever annotate your book, then if you delete it and redownload you'll get a new version. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with the old version. Presumably there's no way to delete the annotations off the Amazon server to work around this.

By "annotate" do you mean simple bookmarks?

(Either way, that's really ridiculous...)

That makes sense, since annotations are tied to a fixed location within the ebook (which may not be the same in the new one). I assume you could delete all the annotations in the existing ebook on your Kindle in order to get the new one.

I would imagine bookmarks as well, yes. I agree, it's really ridiculous. Much better to simply invalidate them. But they're backed up on the server, so while deleting the book off your Kindle deletes the bookmarks and notes on the Kindle, the backup version is still on Amazon, waiting to be re-downloaded when you re-download the book.

I have no idea why this is the case, since kindle books have version numbers that could easily override this. I also have *zero evidence* how this actually works; Amazon does not say and the few people with experience have offered conflicting reports.

I have a Kindle 1, Sony 505 and Itouch. Which format would be the best if I want to be able to read on any of the three? Is there a single format that can be read on all three and how do I find out how to remove the DRM from any of the formats. I have three different devices for different uses (one was a gift). I don't want to have to buy more than one copy of a book, and I want to be able to read it on any of them. Help! I am new to ereading and really love it. Because I travel a lot I like to be able to carry an ereader instead trying to carry books but it gets confusing trying to remember which book is on which reader. I really want to get these books but since I don't yet know how to fix the problems most of you routinely fix I am not sure where to go from here.
I also want to thank all of you who post here. This site has been so helpful!! I am not a tech person so reading these threads has really helped.

There is no single format that works on all three. The DRM on all the major formats (except TOPAZ on the Kindle, which is still rare) can be circumvented. In your case, I think the simplest approach is to buy from Amazon and read this directly on the Kindle and the iPod Touch. Download the Kindle's AZW to your PC, strip the DRM using mobidedrm to give a DRM-free MOBI and then convert to ePub for the PRS-505 using Calibre. The ePub can also be read on your Touch using Stanza if you prefer it to the "Kindle" app. If the ebook is in TOPAZ on the Kindle, then it probably isn't available from any other legal source as an ebook. Either return it (based on its almost inevitable crappy formatting) or read it on your Kindle or Touch only.

You will need to use the command line to run the mobidedrm.py script. The script for stripping Adobe ePub DRM is easier to use, and ePub is an alternative if you don't want to buy from Amazon. Buy Adobe ePub from Books on Board, read them directly on your PRS-505. Strip its DRM (Adobe ADEPT DRM for EPUB circumvented) and read the DRM-free ePub on your Touch using Stanza. Convert to MOBI using Calibre for your Kindle. Note that UK titles won't be in the Kindle store and are often only in ePub (I buy them from WHSmiths).
