Agreed but I think more people fly than go on submarines or get MRI's.

Note, some phones don't have wifi only 3g and they still need a turn off all radio signals mode.

Oh wait that wouldn't work because some people would be thinking but I don't have/use the radio.

I think they should call it Hospital mode. More people visit hospitals than they fly. Besides, if I understand currently, one doesn't even need to switch off radio devices or wifi on airplanes anymore. It's just force of habit at this point. Makes airplane mode a misnomer.

I am not, but as I understand it, that has to do with them wanting passengers to be safely strapped in and not having any loose objects lying around that might hurt people in case of turbulence or the like.

No wrong. Has everything to do with it being electronics. They don't mind you read a pbook, but last time I checked they had a fit about an ereader even in airplane mode.

I flew internationally last September, and within the USA in December, and was only told to put my Kindle in "Airplane" mode. I was allowed to keep reading.

I'm just relaying what I've been told by the stewardess. I tell them it's on airplane mode, and they say they don't want it slipping out and hitting someone in case of turbulence.

The sentence they always use during their sweep down the aisle, in my experience of flying Asian routes, is to "keep the xx away please", not "have you turned on airplane mode?"

Last time I flew, the only thing allowed out during take off and landing was a baby bottle firmly in the baby's mouth. Once we reached cruising altitude, you could take out whatever toys you had brought with you.
One lady on another forum said the flight attendant threatened to put her off the plane because she wouldn't put her knitting up. The lady tried to claim medical reasons, the attendant said where is your doctor's note. She didn't have one.

For the last couple of years or so, most airlines in the United States allow people to use devices in "airplane" mode during take off or landing. Before that, when flying I was always asked to turn my Kobo/Kindle completely off. Now, I'm allowed to keep reading as long as wifi is off.
