I went and looked at the fire phone pre-order page. It's $199 with plan, and a year of prime comes with that price.
What turns me off it isn't the phone, it's the plan. I need minimal talk & text, but large amts of data. Few phone plans do that ![]() The nearest plan they have has 450 minutes of talk, text pay-per-text, and with 5gb of data that comes to $89 a month. I get my hotspot with 5Gb for $49 per month. So no. |

So it's not the phone your beef is with, but AT&T. I wish they at least could have went with Sprint first, with Unlimited data. I guess I'll wait.

The picture option failed immediately on the N7 but worked on the N5. The scanner worked on both. Strange since the N7 was the one that was compatible according to the Play store. I had to restore it to the N5 using titanium backup.

As I recall, when the iPad first came out, it was exclusive to AT&T. Perhaps there are some behind-the-scenes deals that AT&T are offering these folks to entice them to start with AT&T as the sole carrier.

You're right that my beef is with the plan, not with the phone, but a phone is useless without a good plan.
Here's hoping that they can come up with a data-hog plan for a reasonable price. I'm not holding my breath, but it's possible they'll add more plans later. |

You know what would be really killer? If Amazon came out with an unlocked E-Ink phone like the one Onyx just announced, but with a better and faster OS, a camera, and wispersync so you can read on your phone when you're out without having to drag a Kindle around yet pick up reading your book on your Kindle when you get back home without losing your place. Color E-Ink would be nice, but a B/W screen wouldn't be that much of a drawback for taking color pictures, because most folks these days already edit their photos on a PC or tablet before sharing them. Basically all you need to know from your phone as far as taking pictures goes is whether or not you're chopping someone's head off, and I wouldn't doubt that somebody somewhere is working on an app capable of even fixing that in editing. The E-Ink screen would be the pits for running most apps, but for the things you really need in life—an e-reader that's useful under all lighting conditions, a camera, and a device that lets you call home from the supermarket—it would fill the bill nicely.

With the right hardware, it would make a great audio player - Audible, Prime Music, Pandora, FM radio, etc. With enough storage, you could download MP3s and audiobooks.
