hmmm...the amazon tablet intrigues me, but i don't really NEED it, so will not buy in the near future. as for the ereaders, i'd rather buy when there's an improvement in the e-ink display.

Well bugger all on offer for those of us located "down under" Basically all we can get is the basic non touch model without special offers for $109. This is a backwards step from my current K3. I was surpised though that pre-order wasn't necessary and the website indicated delivery, if ordered today, between 3rd and 5th October for the device and 4th - 7th November for the leather cover.
Also contacted Dick Smith Electronics who distribute these in Australia and they seemed blissfully ignorant. They had heard there were new models but could give no advice on if or when they might be available through their stores. |

I think it's just a matter of numbers. Amazon simply can't manufacture enough in time for a full international release. And they probably decided there would be more demand for the el cheapo model. Hopefully there is a change between now and the shipping date for the US buyers. I reckon there's a fair chance we can get them down under close to Christmas (though probably on the wrong side of Christmas). Good work calling Dick Smiths. This is the first batch of new Kindles since they became available in shops here, so I'm interested to know how long it will take before the new ones arrive in shops. |

I wonder what the deal will be with the lighted kindle touch case. With my KSO, one of the first offers was a case for 50% off. It would have saved me thirty dollars to wait to buy the case.

Big W in Australia has just started selling Kindle Keyboards and a Kindle Touch 3G would probably take the wind out of their sales (pun unintended). Those DownUnder - Try a US forwarder You can still order a US-only Kindle and get it sent to a US forwarder (eg MyUS.com or Shipito.com - just Google "US shipping address") - of course you need to do the numbers. I worked out that getting a Kindle Fire to Australia will cost around $US 250 - this assume Amazon ship it for free to the US address - which I think they will. (I don't know if this process makes you eligible for the other Kindle services - if it did it would be a nice bonus.) Anyway just my two cents. I have a Kindle Keyboard (wifi and 3G) and still enjoy it and while the Fire is tempting I will wait...a bit...maybe... Last edited by Wasabihound; 09-29-2011 at 05:36 AM. |

If I ordered a button Kindle to Sweden it would end up costing the equivalent of $169 with postage (about 1130 Kr.) because for some reason they add an extra $30 import deposit. That's still cheaper than most equivalent readers on the Swedish market. Currently the Sony T1 has a pre-order price roughly the equivalent of $250 and you can buy a Kobo Touch via Ebay for about 180 dollars (with postage and if it doesn't get stuck with a 32% import tax)

Just out of curiosity...
Is the 'Kindle Keyboard' still identical in all respects to the Kindle 3, or does it feature any changes, apparent or otherwise? An under-the-hood change like a faster processor, for example? Or is the faster processing power only required by the touch function on the touch versions? Also, I note a different interface on the new touch versions. There are some aspects I like, like the expanded dictionary window, and some I don't appreciate, like the shopping cart button on the menu bar. Will the new interface be forced on existing Kindle 3 users via a firmware update? The blatant shopping cart button alone makes me want to stick with the current interface. |

Or, maybe I just don't find them intrusive, and it has nothing to do with being manipulated by Amazon.

Hi
I think the new ones are an extension (rather than replacements - but for how long I can't say). I was just looking at the specs for all the Kindles and the Kindle Keyboard looks like it is the Kindle 3 we still all know and love. Not sure about a firmware upgrade - some parts of the interface would be redundant (such as the onscreen keyboard) also the fact that the new Kindles have a touch screen as opposed to a keyboard means the whole interaction is different. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I would like to get Silk as a update to my experimental browser on my Kindle but I actually don't browse that much anyway. If you want to see the comparative specs you can scroll down to the bottom of this page from Amazon. |
