I googled it - never heard of it. A definite challenge.

Hmmmm...I gots no problems with tough movies and don't want to discriminate, but perhaps we need to narrow the options a bit then.
What say you all to these conditions going forward? - movies here must come from within the last 40 years [2 generations] - movies must be sufficiently well-known [either film award winners, notorious, etc] My intention with this thread is twofold: - for us all to have some fun; - to introduce some movies our fellow MR peeps may not be familiar with Last thing I think we want to do is make this thread an exercise in head-scratching ![]() ![]() what say you all? |

^ Good point. OK, scratch that 40 year limit thing...
How about: - gotta be award winners or at least nominees; - sufficiently notorious, widely publicized, etc...stuff like that... ? |

"That's better, George Merry. Why, this boy's got more fight than the whole of you!"
I don't know if it won awards(IMDB doesn't say much on that), but I believe it's fairly well known. |

I agree. Most of the quotes so far are pretty obscure, and people are just not going to know them. If we keep having to resort to Google and the IMDB, then what's the point. They need to stand a chance of being guessed.

I must be using an enhanced version of Google?

Perhaps it was a mistake to use as the first quote something not in the IMDB database? And for the second quote to use the actual film dialog instead of the hashed up version at IMSB? There is a lesson there, something like:
Ransom Stoddard: “You're not going to use the story, Mr. Scott?” Maxwell Scott: “No, sir. This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” That's a quote from an entirely different film, and yes it's from the IMDB database. Just Google it if you have to. ![]() Quote:
As far as the first criteria, a quick but not exhaustive survey of the movies offered in this thread reveals Mephisto is one of the few that actually won an Academy Award. But do carry on. I'm just an interloper and I'm finished. |

"When there's treasure in the hold, there's fire in the fo'c'sle. "
It's based on a classic story. Would have posted another clue sooner but have had problems with my computer today. Must be my turn with the gremlins. |

Good points from all on the relative toughness of the quotes/obscurity of the films.
I am new here and even if I weren't I am not one to dictate rules - I am the guy who likes to bend them as much as possible. ![]() So, I think we maybe let the thread continue as is - like anything else, it will morph over time [hopefully] and we can have some fun and possibly learn about some classic movies we never heard of before. Its all good enough for me ![]() Just thankful this thread has any interest at all [unlike that other one I made about "Pictures of Your Gear"...] ![]() |

Yep RichD (and The Terminator) got it right. It's from the 1934 version with Jackie Cooper who died just recently.
