Yup, I checked this morning too. However it's weird that they didn't change the file. I guess the "beta-ness" was just a placebo, or a back door in case it caused the Kindle to flame up or something.

At least it meant you didn't have to change your jailbreak. I downloaded a copy and am curious to try it out, but may wait for a few more daring members to take a stab at it before I do.

I installed the beta version of the firmware and now have version 3.1 (558700031) on my device.

Could someone who was brave enough to do the update but hadn't previously installed the beta version share their firmware version please?

Is there any way to force my Kindle to update itself? I've had it on with WiFi for about 20 minutes, but when I put it to sleep it didn't update itself. And the option to update is still grayed out in the menu.

You could simply download the update from the Kindle site (depending on your type of kindle), without waiting for the wifi push and copy it on your kindle. Then, to directly quote the guys:

(This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed or if the file transfer was not successful.) Select "Ok" when prompted if you want to perform an update. I have left my Wi-Fi on all day and the update hasn't go through. How can I tell when the update go through?

Supposedly, my LOTR edition should have page numbers but I am not seeing anything.

I have a generic Kindle 3 with no hacks, no betas that was updated via WiFi about 15 minutes ago. My version number matches yours.

Two quick checks you can do:

1. Press MENU, then select SETTINGS. Look at the bottom of the screen - it'll show which firmware version is installed.

2. Open any book. Look at the progress bar at the bottom of the screen. If location numbers are shown, you still have the old firmware version installed. If no location numbers are shown, you have the new version. With firmware version 3.1, the location numbers should only show when you press MENU and have the main menu displayed.

Thanks! Still have verison 3.0.2. I guess I will try to manually download when I get home.

You must be connected via wifi to get the update wirelessly.
Apparently amazon stopped pushing updates via 3g to save costs.

I kept connecting to the WiFi but the 3G is overriding it. Is anyone else having this problem?

While I guess anything is possible, the design behavior is for wifi to always take precedence over 3G. If you're connecting with 3G, it's most likely that you don't have a valid wifi connection. Perhaps you can try to remove the connection and re-add it, double checking the security info?

Here's an email from Amazon about the update,

"Dear Kindle Customer,

We have a new, free software update for your Kindle that will be delivered via a Wi-Fi connection over the next few days. To receive the update, please turn your wireless on and connect to an available Wi-Fi network (learn how to set up Wi-Fi on your Kindle). The software update will automatically download in the background and install when your Kindle goes into sleep mode. The update should take less than 10 minutes to complete. If a Wi-Fi connection is not available or you would prefer to transfer the update via USB, please view these instructions. "

I was hoping they weren't going to send out the update automatically, but I'm interested in the new news layout and I've heard rumors that the page turn speed has increased
