Upgraded to 1.10. Love the Recent Tasks display and the option to have dark Soft Keys. Also, set up the "n" button the way I like. Much better functionality. Not awkward to use now. Very appreciative! Oh, and the soft Home button is great with the press and long press customization.

Edit: Helpful settings from XDA Developers post (adapted)

Here are my settings for the Softkeys app that seem to work well:

Virtual Home Button

Normal Press > ADW Launcher
Long Press > Default NOOKcolor Home
Return after Back > Unchecked

Physical Home Button
Single Press > Launcher
Double Press > Exit

Visuals and Layout

Theme > Default
Exit Button > Checked
Prefs Button > Unchecked
Blur Behind > Unchecked
Dim Background > Checked
Recent Apps > Unchecked

Notification Bar
No items checked

One press of 'n' button brings up softkeys. Double clicking the 'n' button will take you home immediately.

Good news! I'm back in business. A dark closet did the trick.

ETA: I'm a glutton for punishment! Decided to try 2 brightness setting again. DO NOT DO THIS! Even in a closet I was unable to see the backlight/screen. My lowest default button is 5. Don't take it any lower than that!

Thankfully the program stayed open and once I unlocked my screen I quickly started tapping in the area where the number buttons were and got back to a level I could see.

Scion...I think this "upgrades" me from spontaneous to stoopid. Or downgrades....

Why would you try 2 again? You knew the outcome already? Hilarious.

I can only imagine how you were as a toddler!!!

This is too funny... maybe you thought going back to 2 would give you a brighter screen this time?

Glad you were able to muddle your way back.

I've set mine like yours except for the Visuals. And it's not working for me as I had hoped. When using Aldiko, I can't get the softkeys to appear all the time. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and I don't know what I did different.

Also, the adjbrightness app was ok for dimming lower than the nook's 20 setting but when I open Aldiko, it went back to the nook's default at 50. I tried using the Lock Brightness setting and that did the trick... BUT when I hit the power button to put it in sleep mode, the screen went blank but still lit at 20. It wouldn't turn off. So that needs to be fixed before it can be useful.

Finally, does Google eBooks work on the Nook? I thought I read that it did but I couldn't get it to work on mine.

Is SoftKeys set as your default launcher? It needs to be. If you have the Home Switcher app you can use that to set it as default. Also, when you set the SoftKeys settings, reboot.

I had issues as well, not having a firm grasp of how the SoftKeys is supposed to be set. Let me know if it doesn't help or if the problem is only Aldiko.

No, Google Books will not work because it's looking for a Google account on your device. If you enable the Android Market you'll have access to that functionality and other stuff. All things Google will work.

LOL. I feel like an idiot... with Aldiko, you can change the brightness by sliding a finger along the left edge of the screen..

As a helpful suggestion to all... if there are pop up tips within an app, it's a good idea to read them.

Here's my settings for SoftKeys...

Virtual Home Button:
Normal Press = Zeam
Long Press = Home (Nook)
Return After Back = Unchecked

Physical Home Button:
Single Press = Launcher
Double Press = Exit

Visuals and Layout:
Theme = Dark
rest are defaults

And Home Switcher is set to SoftKeys as default.

It's working well enough. I even figured out that the circle with a down arrow bring up the menu screen in Aldiko that has all the options for the app! Yeah, I know.. DUH!

Thanks for the help SCION. I think this needs to be in my signature because I seem to say thanks to you alot!
