Yes, it is a good idea to read in order. It's not a good idea to start with book 7. It's never a good idea to start of a series out of order. No matter how many people say a book in a series is standalone, it's not. It would have to be 100% different meaning none of the same characters and nothing about it would be referencing anything from the previous books or any books further on in the series has anything to do with that book.

That said, here's the list of the books.

I still have one "Kid Sensation" book to tackle (Book Three: Infiltration), so I figure I'll stick with superhero fiction this week. After that, I'm switching over to SF so I can read Book One of a series before a bundle containing the next three expires.

Spoiler:

Although the reality of both Christian and Norse religions in the story seemed contradictory and unexplained.

Only so-so in the end. I find I had read this before, but I'd forgotten all except one incident.

Next up:
Forever Odd by Dean Koontz. The second in this series.

Have fund with Odd! I enjoyed the series and its quirkyness.

I'm starting The Boys in the Boat.

Finally finished Star Trek Prey: Hall of Heroes by John Jackson Miller. I just found the whole trilogy kind of meh and wasn't that into it for some reason. I think I'm taking a break from Star Trek books for a while.

Continuing on with Murder in the Secret Garden by Ellery Adams, which I started a few days ago. A nice cozy mystery! Also book 3 in the series.

I'm not sure what it says about this month overall that my best reads have consistently been manga. All I can hope is that the year gets better.

I found the Prey series to be pretty good. The Star Trek book I am finding so-so at best is Strange New Worlds 2016. Because it's just short stories, I'm able to leave it for now.

I finished this last week and then had a drought of non-reading days. Finally jumped back in with John Knowles' A Separate Peace and an ARC of the upcoming FSG translation of Hideo Yokoyama's Six Four.

A strangely compelling fantasy mystery. I'm very glad I bought these, and I'm looking forward to the next one, in due course.

One way to judge how much I like a story is how quickly I finish it. I only started this one yesterday morning.

Next up: Some historical fiction, set in mediaeval Glasgow. The Stolen Voice by Pat McIntosh, featuring Gilbert Cunningham, a lawyer. I've been very impressed with this series for what feels like* well-researched historical accuracy that doesn't get in the way of the story telling.

* I haven't checked, and I know very little of Scottish mediaeval history.

I'm following my stash of Kid Sensation books with the last two books in Kelly Meding's MetaWars quartet. More superheroing, but on the darker/grittier edge. In this setting, Manhattan - the whole island - was used as a prison for supervillains, and fifteen years ago Something Happened that depowered all the supers. During the first book, the powers begin to return, and the mystery of what happened to remove them gets explored.

Something notable in the MetaWars books is that crimefighting is dangerous, even lethal, if you're not very careful. People also aren't very fond of the collateral damage (human and property), and as book three begins, a presidential candidate is using anti-Meta sentiment as part of his campaign. (I should point out that these books were published solidly before the Rise Of Trump.)

I liked some of it, like the illusionists and Ardra, but I'm not a big fan of Klingon stories so maybe that was it. Didn't know there was new Strange New Worlds books out.

I don't know anything about this series so this isn't a comment on that but sometimes ignorance really is bliss. Knowing too much and seeing even one little thing wrong can reduce the enjoyment I have in some books.

Oh, yes indeed. I've dropped an SF writer because they had their spaceships manoeuvring like sea-going ships for no reason. And I couldn't get through Outlander - the anachronisms were too much!

But this series at least doesn't contradict anything I know!

Just started on James Patterson's Alex Cross series. I had read Along came a spider years ago so rereading it.
