I don't buy that. There is no prohibition, at least not in the Netherlands, preventing women to attain anything they want, if they have the proper qualifications. Actually, there are laws (or laws on the verge of being passed) that specifically give precedence to women and other groups.
For your own sake, don't get me started on quotes that oblige companies to hire X percent of women as executives or employee, to hire Y percent of non-western foreigners, or Z percent of chronically ill people. I, as a healthy white Dutch male, are near the bottom of every application procedure because of that shit; thus I'm discriminated against by law, although Article 1 of our constitution says that it is prohibited. In the Netherlands, it's very advantageous to hire a chronically ill, non-western woman to fulfill an executive position. You'll fill at least three quotes with one person. (Four, if she also has a bit of a mental handicap.) You know that companies are actually subsidized in some circumstances to do stuff like this? It's twiddling with numbers, I say, to pretend that everything over here is fair, just, exactly equal and tolerant for each and every group . That laws, giving advantages to some groups also cause the corresponding disadvantaged for the opposite groups is conveniently forgotten. Last edited by Katsunami; 12-29-2014 at 01:17 PM. |

Well Julia Child springs to mind. But there are very few females holding top kitchen positions in restaurants as you note. There is a bit of a glass ceiling, not in company hiring practices, but in hierarchy in the hospitality industry. People in my experience generally perceive the chef as male. And male chefs and cooks seem to be more aggressively seeking career advancement. There are many exceptions of course. And women of my generation at least, were brought up that cooking in the home was their duty and did not see it as a glamorous or lucrative career choice. Not to mention that even today a server in a good or even reasonable restaurant, male or female, make upwards of four times as much as the top kitchen staff. (not in all countries but many). I was speaking of cooking at home in my original post which seemed clear from the post I was responding to but I guess not ![]() My father was a chef who worked 60+hours a week and rarely cooked at home. I have worked quite a few years on and off in the hospitality industry, even once as a cook, which I didn't care for although I was considered a success by my employer and the customers, and again in my experience, few male chefs or even line cooks cook at home. The wife and kids want to eat their cooking they come to the restaurant. Helen |

The Selfie was NOT invented in 1981!
Let me say first that I have nothing against selfies. Sure, they're a bit narcissistic, but so what?
What bugs me is to keep hearing the claim that in 1981 Lester Wisbrod became the first person to ever take a selfie. B-capital-S, and that spells Bologna! We were taking selfies with Instamatics when I was a kid, and I'm 64-freakin'-years old. No, I wasn't the first; I saw another kid do it and thought it was cool and did it. Moreover, we weren't the first. I imagine selfies go all the way back to the beginnings of photography. The first known selfie was taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839. Couldn't you count self portrait paintings under "selfie" as well?

The early disposable cameras (first made in the '40's) made in the early 80's had curved mirrors on the front of them for composing selfies.
It amazes me to see tourists who pay thousands of dollars to come to a photo-rich environment, standing in some magnificent tourist venue, taking selfies with nothing of the venue behind them. A friend's wife does this all the time when we go sightseeing together, then posts them to her Facebook page. You can't tell where the shots were taken except by reading the caption! Stitchawl |

Yeah, a friend of mine took "selfies" with his Kodak Instamatic (126 cartridge film) in my freshman year at college, in 1970. His name wasn't Lester.

My friend is still trying to get me to join Amway. It's kinda starting to piss me off.

I ordered some stamps this afternoon and just now I get an email from that company with a code for 10% off all stamps. It would only have saved me a couple of euros, but a bummer nonetheless.

I don't, either.
But, my next younger brother just retired from teaching at a university out here, and he runs a scientific photography business as a sideline. Since retiring he's been traveling around taking "selfies" at various locations, with or without former students and colleagues, and posting them on Facebook. I'm sure there's an element of ego involved (I know my brother!) but it's harmless fun and it's an excuse to check in with folks he's known for years. I kid him about it, but not too seriously. |

I tend to cheer on those hapless nitwits that try to take selfies with bears. A Darwin Award in the making ..
