Wired for Books

Wired for Books is an online educational project of the WOUB Center for Public Media at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. The website features author interviews, dramatic audio productions of classic literature, readings of poetry, short stories, lectures, essays, and children's literature.

Nearly 700 uncut audio author interviews conducted by Don Swaim for his "Book Beat" show on CBS Radio are available at Wired for Books in their entirety. Original unabridged audio productions of The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, A Christmas Carol, and The Tragedy of Macbeth can be found at Wired for Books in streaming media. Poets, essayists, and fiction writers read their works, often with commentary. Kids' Corner, the children's section of Wired for Books, features the stories of Beatrix Potter and other classic stories for children.

I think I've stumbled upon the upcoming Whispersync freebie for the month before Amazon has updated their link pages. It looks like this month you can get Mark Twain's "Life on the Mississippi." I like this W4V freebie because this isn't a Twain book I would have thought of to look for; now that I have it I'm looking forward to it. Remember, to get it for free first get the Kindle book (here) before getting the Audible title (here)

• Civil Disobedience & Life Without Principle -- Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau was an American author, naturalist and philosopher. While best known for his lasting classic Walden, his prolific work as an essayist also earned him worldwide renown as a leading light in American literature. Included in this selection are two of his most famous essays:

Civil Disobedience is Thoreau's primary essay on how to interact with Government. Here the author argues that a citizen must always uphold conscience over what is prescribed by law. Never one to accept the status quo, Thoreau says that if called, we must all disobey a system that is inherently prone to corruption and that even personal endangerment may be needed in order do what is right. An inspiration to luminaries such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., this essay is one of the core American writings on government.

Life Without Principle is an essay in which Thoreau lays out his program for right living. Included here are his ideas on how to approach interpersonal communication, modes of work, financial livelihood and other codes of conduct one may face in life.

It's not free as part of the Daily Deal, actually. This is one of those cases where those who already own the e-book are being shown the WFV price rather than the deal price because the former is lower. For those who haven't already picked up the free (or any other eligible) Kindle version, the deal price is $3.95.

You're right. I keep forgetting about that feature on Audible where it shows you the prices you're eligible for and not what others will pay.
