I am sitting at my desk, posting a dumb entry on the MOBILEREAD Forums, from the USS Abraham Lincoln. We are currently in 5th Fleet (Middle East) conducting combat missions in support of OEF (Operation Enduring Freedom).

And I am reading an email from the wife detailing my family's Thanksgiving that I missed.

ahhhh! I know I sure missed my share of holidays! ;o(

it can be worse... my daughter and her husband were transferred to Pearl in September, he was lured with a special assignment on a special boat. when he got there they said, oh well, you're going to Guam. so now she is in Pearl alone and he is assigned to a boat in Guam

Ouch! I have been pretty lucky with being stationed with my family for my entire career. Minus the deployments of course.

Actually truly blessed with 22 of my 25 years being stationed in Washington State. I am from Tacoma and the wife is from Puyallup.

Hawaii and Guam are great to visit, but I would not want to be stationed there... no offense.

the second time I was married it was 12 years before we were together for our anniversary or my birthday. we were both active duty so it was really hit or miss

the frustrating thing for my daughter is that they wrestled very hard with whether or not to have him take the shorter unaccompanied tour or go together. a big part of her life is also skiing so it was a huge sacrifice for her to go. now they're split up again and she is just spinning her wheels until school starts sometime in January. I did a 6 week project in Hawaii a couple of years ago, I have to agree... fine place to visit, I wouldn't want to live there

Waiting for the washing machine to finish cleaning mud, diatomaceous earth and rock salt out of my work uniform. Yuck. Getting slimed with that stuff doesn't look good when you work in foodservice Fortunately it happened near the end of my shift so there was no danger of food contamination, I was just cleaning up before I left.

I just started reading the 3rd book in the Jack Reacher series (macho guy thriller mystery type, if you haven't been following the Reacher thread). Anyway, in this book, Reacher has spent 3 months getting paid for what most guys would spend big money at the gym to do. He's been digging in-ground pools. By hand shovel (the yards are too small for a big digger). So he's in the best shape of his life!

Although, he was in Key West, wayyyy south Florida, so it wasn't frozen ground, like you are dealing with. But you reminded me of him....
