I understand that eyeglasses are now seen by the younger generation as a 'fashion statement,' and are wearing them with plain glass lenses as 'style.' It's come 180 degrees from our childhood days of being called '4-eyes' and 'Mr. Magoo,' and hiding your glasses until you absolutely needed them to read something.

So when are you going to get your eyebrows, nose, cheeks, and tongue pierced, and your neck tattooed to your bellybutton?

No plans for any of that.

When my kids were growing up I told them could have any piercings or tattoos that they wanted. There was just one stipulation: they had to let me do it.

Once again awake after far too little sleep, have only had 3-3 hours sleep. Fortunately it's an easy day, flight out is late afternoon and there are no pressing obligations, just a few personal errands I'd like to run. Pain levels are pretty damn high, might take another pain pill just to try to snooze a bit more

That reminds me. My Primary Care Physician has been after me to get an eye exam, but I never can seem to reach the people I want. I'll give it another shot while I'm thinking about it.

I didn't mind when I started to need glasses to read. I thought they made me look like a wise and respected college professor—especially when I peered over them to speak to someone.

The novelty quickly wore off, however. There's no way to look intelligent and sophisticated when you're fumbling with your glasses while bending down in the grocery store to check a price on the bottom shelf.

My father stilll refuses to wear them, and gets teased unmercifully about it. He is the only person in my family who doesn't wear glasses or contacts full-time, but he should...

He cannot legally drive without them, so that is the only time he wears them... except when he can't find them because he doesn't use them, which made it very fun to be driven anywhere by him.

A watch is a fashion statement, why not glasses too?

I wore glasses starting at age four. All my relatives and family friends called me "Professor," probably so I wouldn't feel badly about having to wear them. But by age 13, I was able to stop, so my puberty years weren't hampered by the feelings so prevalent about eyeglasses back then. I didn't start again until I was in my late 30's, and have been wearing them ever since. With the advent of the progressive lenses and the sun-transition lenses, I wear the same pair all of my waking hours with no problems at all. I've always worn the Ray-ban Aviator frames, and I guess I'll stick with them for years I have left.

Oh god, a friend of mine has been ensnared by the Amway scam. How on earth am I supposed to break it to him?
