It's actually a synonym for "to complain." Never knew that.

It's Yiddish, and it becomes part of your vocabulary if you live in NYC. Yiddish has marvelous invective.

Yiddish has sometimes been called the language of retail, because it has entered the retailing vocabulary. (Spend time working in retail, and you get lots of excuse to use invective.) My SO once reported passing a couple of Indian shopkeepers chattering away at each other. What she heard was "Hindi Hindi Hindi Schmuck! Hindi Hindi..." I assumed "schmuck" was a reference to their landlord. :-)

If you can find a copy, Leo Rosten's "The Joys of Yiddish" is immensely entertaining.

(I also once overheard a Latino in NYC asking an Indian "How you say "asshole" in Tamil?" Unfortunately, I didn't overhear the answer.)

Reminds me of Rex, a big ugly yellow dog I had a number of dog lifetimes ago. Rex loved my garden; he would happily eat it all; all except the tomatoes, which he avoided like the plague. In fact he hated them so much that he wouldn’t even go past the row of tomatoes.

Next season, I planted tomatoes all around the edge of the garden, and had no more trouble with Rex eating the zucchini.

My back started hurting yesterday afternoon, for no apparent reason. The big test is going to bed. Sometimes, the rest is all it needs, and it's better in the morning. Other times, the muscles stiffen up, then I move in my sleep and they start to spasm. Then the only thing that helps at all (aside from some Aleve) is to get up and sit on one of the chairs in the living room. I can get a little rest in brief periods of sleep and the position feels better for my back.

Last night they spasmed. So now, my back hurts and I'm dead tired.

Ouch! Do you have a recliner you can sleep in?

I have a similar problem with migraines - I can't lie down while the meds are kicking in - I have to sit upright in a chair with my head vertical!

No recliner here, but I may lobby for one next time "we" buy furniture.

Our son used to get migraines. He grew out of them gradually when he was 8 to 10 years old. He would roll up into a ball in a dark, quiet room. Fortunately, his were preceded by auras, sometimes 15 minutes before the headache, and we learned that we could really make a difference if we gave him Ibuprofen at the first sign of an aura.

(Interestingly, I get "visual migraines" -- just the aura, but no headache. It happens very rarely, but it can be interesting.)

Maybe it's a pug thing. Norton doesn't like peanut butter, either. Then again, he doesn't like anything twice in a row.

My friend started getting 'visual migraines' - then developed a detached retina ... might want to mention these (if you haven't already) to your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

I'm overdue, but the initial diagnosis was made by an ophthalmologist. My family has bad eyes -- in fact, one of my sisters made the cover of a medical magazine many years ago. And, three weeks ago one of my brothers had a detached retina (which responded well to out-patient treatment and won't require surgery), but he's near-sighted (also a risk factor) and I'm not.

And, in other news, I took a (prescription) muscle relaxant last night and managed to get at least some sleep. My back is still sore, but better than yesterday.

There are two different things called visual migraines. One version is due to a problem in the visual cortex and appears in both eyes simultaneously. The other is due to a problem in the eye itself and affects one eye only.

I very occasionally (perhaps three or four times over 20 years) get the first sort.

Anyone experiencing vision problems that affect one eye only should seek specialist attention ASAP.

Yep, both eyes simultaneously for me, but stronger in the right eye and they tend to drift to the right so that eye gets the last "look" at them. I've had a few more than pdurrant, but only three or four that were strong enough to interfere with my activities. When that happens there's nothing more to do than sit back and watch the pretty lights.

Also, the very strong ones all seem to have come on when I was extremely sleep-deprived. Something I'm more careful about these days.

I had the bright lights and went to the doctor. It was the fluidy stuff tearing in my eye. We kept track of it and it looks like it was a one time thing but something to keep in mind. I had whapped myself in the eye with a ball playing tug with Caya and that is probably what caused it.

ie Bright, shining lights in your eyes are not good things. Go to the doctor as soon as possible.
