ROFLU! You guys are too funny.

@covingtoncat73: I suggest Noro Virus. "But I am feeling a bit better, maybe I'll come anyway."

You, ProfCrash, have my full sympathy.

I haven't been able to take one of my long hikes since I tore the meniscus in my knee last year. I sympathize, ProfCrash!

And, I have relatives on the full spectrum of ... eccentric ... so, good luck, covingtoncat73! (And good luck to your cat, too!)

Thanks, cromag. I am sorry you haven't been able to do your hikes. Yes, I like to say that I don't have a family so much as I have a Tennessee Williams play.

Cinder-kitty is doing better. I will have to take her to the vet again tomorrow, though, to see how she is doing.

How about just "I'm sorry, but my work schedule it too full as it is, and I have a sick kitty to nurse. I can't make it to the dinner."

That works.

Good news, the swelling is going down, the red is receding and the itching has stopped. I go to see my regular doctor today to make sure that all is moving in the right direction. I love modern medicine.

Yeah, the lack of good hiking was a bummer. I love hiking with the little man but that means pretty short hikes that take two hours. He is 2 so that is expected and fine. I am a bit baffled that my Husband didn't want to leave him with is parents once or twice in the morning so we could go for a couple of nice 5-10 mile hikes.

Ah well, he respects my decisions with my family and I need to respect his.

That is what I should have done, Pooh. I called my cousin to determine that her crazy mother (unfortunately, my blood-aunt) was NOT going to be there, so I thought it would be okay. It was her husband and kids, my uncle, and a nice couple that both my uncle and cousin know but I've never met and I do like my cousin's husband and kids (her husband and her older daughter are my irl book-buddies).

So far, so good, right? No. Without going into a lot of family history, let me just say that my cousin was bringing up family crap I feel she should definitely NOT have been bringing up in front of casual friends/acquaintances/strangers (what the couple is to her, the uncle, and myself respectively). I finally sternly whispered, "Change. the. subject." into her ear but maintained my decorum and courtesy, I believe.

I really want to call or email her to tell her that, the next time she does that, I have some choice stories about her mother to share with whoever she is going on about my side of the family to. I never hear her regale guests with tales of her demented mother's past, for some reason.

Also, she is the type that is constantly asking personal questions. A mutual cousin calls her "the interrogator." I almost slapped her when, the day after our grandmother died, she asked my sobbing mother why she didn't get the ambulance there more quickly and not in tone of someone who should have been in mourning herself but wasn't crying or anything but in the tone of a lawyer or, more appropriately in this case, a nurse questioning a patient. It has been fifteen years but I think I remember not slapping her but barking at her to shut up. I almost slapped her last night, too, but refrained.

Let me tell you, I was very glad to get home and into bed with my Kindle and CInder-kitty.

There's absolutely no way to win with such people, or even deal with them - the only recourse is to cut the cord - and just say NO!
[And socialize privately with the relatives that you like.]

True enough, I can handle a few individually and briefly but I think it pretty much boils down to my mom and my brother at this point (well and the obnoxious cousin's husband and kids, who are great).

I just got back from and extended lunch trip to the vet for the follow-up. Cinder is progressing well and I shouldn't have to bring her in again for a month. Even though I am having to syringe-feed her still (she will only lick a little at food on her own), she has maintained her weight, which is excellent news. Unfortunately, I am still have to syringe her and I am still having to give her the insulin injections.

After Susie was confined to her wheelchair a few years ago, we found that grabbers in every room was a worthwhile investment. Home Depot had some very heavy duty ones, they were a bit spendy, but well worth it.
