The ancient one is very sharp because my father keeps it that way. But it weighs several kilos so not ideal for taking upstairs. Also the ruler is in centimeters whilst for scrapbooking and Project Life I work in inches (a trimmer having both would be ideal for me).

On Amazon are a lot of reviews discussing the broken wire, though it would surprise me if it's because people don't use it properly.

I'm having so much fun with scrapbooking and Project Life, it's just so overwhelming what tools and supplies to get next.

It's because when some people are talking on a phone, they talk as if they are trying to have the conversation without the phone in between.

Yeah, I can totally hear you in New York... from Paris...

It's really frustrating not being to get somewhere because the buses in certain parts of LA have their final runs at only 9 o'clock.

I thought you were still in Vegas(and I've probably said that before) still, it's amazing that l.a. rolls up the public transportation that early. One of the more brilliant things about Germany was we could party until the wee hours and not worry too much about transportation

Living in Beantown, during and right after college, wasn't much better. It was weird how public transportation closed down before the nightclubs did.

You did...

Yeah, despite being the second largest city in the US, LA's public transportation in general ranks pretty poorly. I mean it has gotten better in recent years, but it still has a long way to go before it catches up with other major cities.

I haven't been to LA in years but I was told more than once that the public transportation was so poor because it was lightly used as practically everyone had a car or three. In Pasadena there were very few sidewalks it seemed as walking farther than next door was considered odd. I once asked in a restaurant where the nearest bus stop was and when someone said they thought there was one a couple of blocks away, I was advised to take a cab to the bus stop as that was too far to walk.

Heh, anyone who tell you that their lightly used has never actually ridden a bus in LA.

Nah, the real problem is the various industries (taxi companies being a big one) that fight tooth and nail to keep public transportation from expanding.

Well I have ridden a bus in LA and it seemed reasonably full. But being there as a tourist (6 times), the people I asked about buses were hotel people and tour type people etc. and they all said no one uses the bus or some variant thereof. Just as they said 2 or 3 blocks was too far to walk and I managed to make it without expiring from exertion or sinking into the ground as there were no sidewalks.

Same in Phoenix, Orlando and small cities/towns in Oregon. I was in Johnston city Tennessee and had to get a taxi to cross the street which was more or less like a freeway Never saw a bus there although I am sure they exist.

There's a reason that you won't find buses full of people in Phoenix; a bus here in mid-July is like Dante's Inferno on Wheels, every possible pun intended. Not to mention, the dreaded bus stops. There's almost nothing here for mass transit; it's all cars, cars cars, and air-conditioned ones, at that. No rolling around with the top down in summer for us. And it's nearly impossible to get anywhere in any reasonably timely fashion. It's far, far easier to get around in NY, including the boroughs and LI, than it is to remotely get to/from work in Phoenix, Arizona, without a bloody car. I feel a lot of sympathy for the workers I see trying to get around on buses and the one rail system we now have (all in downtown, of course. Utter bolloxing waste of money).

Arrrrgggghhhh! I hate stupid web sites. And I really hate Overdrive!

So, I've been using the BC Library's eBook site (powered by Overdrive), for several years. The site requires that I log on with the bar code number from the back of my library card, rather than a user name or email address or whatever. Annoying, but tolerable once I put the details into RoboForm. I haven't used my physical library card in several years, but the other day I wanted to look up something on the actual site for my local Library. And it informed me that my card had expired? Now there is NO expiration date on the card itself. But OK, no big deal, except I couldn't find my old card. Sigh. So, yesterday, I drove the half hour to the library and they were quite helpful, issuing me a new card. BUT, just as I'm leaving, she reminds me that this card has a new number. And now I really start to worry.

Sure enough, I go to log on to the BC Library downloads (aka, Overdrive) site, and I can't. I have 5 books on hold there. Most, no big deal, the hold level is 1-5 people ahead of me. But I was number 7 out of 92 on the waiting list for Chris Hadfield's book! I've been waiting for MONTHS., starting out at #123!!! There are 9 copies, and I was due to get it within the next couple of weeks.

So, I go through the hassle of getting logged in with my new card number, and my worst fears have been true. All of my holds are gone and I have to start all over again. I am now #93 on the wait list for Hadfield's book. AND, when I come up on the list with my old library card? It will email me, at the same address as the new library card, and I won't be able to do anything at all except rant. And wait until the new hold works its way through the list, somewhere in the fall.
