Of course you are free yourself not to read books for silly reason (I do that myself). But trying to discourage others from reading them smacks a little of censorship, sorry.
I agree completely. It's not reasonable to judge anyone based on one E-mail message she sent.

Also, it's not fair to judge an author's work by her personality. Think where Hemingway would be if everyone did that.

Fair comment! I like others will judge her work after a few chapters of her ebook when it becomes available

My Cybook froze again when I was on holiday, and I had to resort to the pbooks I found in my hotel room: a Hercule Poirot mystery and short stories by Agotha Kristoff (not sure about the spelling). Nothing unforgettable but it was stuff to read. Also gave me some second thoughts about this e-books stuff. A book is something you should always be able to count on, not something that breaks in the middle of chapter.

Anyway, after I got back home I re-read American Gods, and then I tried to switch on the Cybook again, and miraculously it's working. So I can continue reading Hamilton, Proust and Darwin.

But in the meantime I visited the public library and borrowed a book by Michel Onfray on the history of philosophy where he sets about righting the wrongs done to materialist philosophers that he says were treated unjustly by the overwhelmingly idealist mainstream philosophy. I think he's probably right about that but still, the book sounds too much like a personal crusade, so I keep going online to try to get some perspective on what he's saying. Luckily the library is still in summer vacation mode so I don't have to give back the book until 15 September.

So now I'm reading 4 books... I need to finish some of them now

I'm reading "Free" by Chris Anderson (which was free). It has some interesting stuff, but it's poorly edited and he is constantly citing Wikipedia.

Just finished _Mistborn_. I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it ended...even though there seem to be two more books. Hmm.... are they as good as the first?

Not sure what to read next. Maybe get some more Steve Jordan books... I read Berserder and I think The Lens is another in that series. Or should I go back to reading some more Start Trek Corp of Engineers? The last couple I read weren't all that great.

Yes, they are both as good. Read them!

Definitely read more Steve Jordan or pick up another of Jeffrey Carver's books.

Oh heck. If you haven't read Dennis Batchelder's Soul Identity and Soul Intent, go get them right away. He's practically giving them away at $0.01 for the first and $0.99 for the second. These are first class books and easily worth the same as one from Steve Jordan, Jeffrey Carver or any of the Baen authors.

Now, as for me, I'm currently reading Soul Intent and will be finishing it before I go to sleep tonight. Next up are a couple of paper books: Patty Jane's House of Curl by Lorna Landvik and A Novena for Murder by Sister Carol Anne O'Marie. I then turn back to the Kindle to read What's a Ghoul to Do? by Victoria Laurie.

I am re-reading the Peculiar Crimes Unit series of off-beat mysteries by Christopher Fowler. If you haven't discovered them, they are real gems, set in London featuring two detectives in their seventies that won't retire, and a supporting cast of misfits. The PCU is given outlandish/fantastic cases to solve - involving the alleged occult or fiendish. Think of X-Files (the humor as well as the spookiness) with Scully & Mulder refusing to retire. Entire series available on Kindle.

hm, i've got "the Victoria Vanishes" on my wishlist at fictionwise. i was hoping they would be similar to the "Department of Dead Ends" stories by Roy Vickers (which are sadly not available as ebooks and out of print even in paper, i think) which i love. i've got an old pocket book of them but i've not had any luck finding any others so far although i'm still looking (but mostly hoping one day they'll be available as ebooks). maybe i'll move the Peculiar Crimes Unit up to the top of my list.

Just think of the episode filmed in B&W - a retelling of the Frankenstein story crossed with Jerry Springer - with a Cher soundtrack - "The Great Mutato"

Or the episode of finding a town totally populated by vampires - with the magic fingers motel bed interlude.

Or the episode in which Scully's dog is eaten by the Midwest version of the Loch Ness monster - and she sings to Mulder on the island.

Or ... you get the picture?

Not really, lol. I watched very few episodes, but the impression I was left with (and part of the reason I gave up on them) was of a general atmosphere of doom and gloom, and of course paranoia. Glad to hear I was wrong
